KUCHING: Sarawak are on course to defend its title as champions in the upcoming 18th Sukma tennis competition at the Sarawak Club and the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Tennis Centre along Jalan Crookshank here from July 22-30.

State Sukma chef de mission Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who visited the state tennis team yesterday, expressed confidence in that outcome.

“I have big confidence in tennis with Datuk Patrick Liew at the helm of SLTA. We are well prepared and some of the players had trained overseas.

“I can see that all the players are very inspired and raring to go. There are seven gold medals at stake in this Sukma XVIII and we should be able to make a good impact here,” he told reporters.

“I hope that tennis enthusiasts in Kuching will turn up in force to give support to the Sarawak team and also to enjoy watching the matches,” he added.

Karim, who is also the assistant minister for Youth and Sports, had been to Miri and Sibu in the past two days to visit athletes and coaches. He has thus far visited or communicated with more than 10 sports and will be trying to visit more. He might be interested in drawing immediate attention to the plight facing state shooters highlighted by our other Sukma-related story today ‘Sarawak Sukma shooters hit by big headache’.

“I will be meeting the sports coordinators or the “sports champions” and all the assistant chef de mission tomorrow night to get the feedback on the progress of the preparations by all the sports,” he said. Earlier, Karim presented the state colours to the state tennis team as they would be unable to attend the Sarawak Sukma XVIII flag presentation at Unimas this Saturday due to a warming-up tournament at SLTA tennis centre.

Karim reminds journalists to practise active lifestyle

Heave-ho as KDJA members pull with all their might in the tug-of-war tussle.
Media go nuts in sunshine on Sports Day at Le’Park

KUCHING: Journalists dumped laptops and tablets to let their feet do the talking at their annual Sports Day at Le’Park, behind civic centre here yesterday.

The outdoor event was organised by Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) in collaboration with Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd.

Assistant Youth Development (Urban) minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was delighted to officiate at the event where local print and broadcast media had no issues to raise for a change.

“This is a great activity that brings journalists together to strengthen ties and at the same time exercise and work out to keep healthy and rejuvenate the body and mind,” he said.

“It is very important for all of us to practise an active lifestyle despite our busy schedules to maintain a healthy body and mind,” Abdul Karim advised.

He also announced a RM7,000 fund to support KDJA in carrying out more activities to benefit its members.

Later, Abdul Karim together with Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato Patrick Liew and KDJA president Sulok Tawie joined a Zumba workout with journalists under the guidance of several instructors.

Cycle under night lights at Le’ Park

June 28, 2013

NEW CYCLING TREK: Karim (right) explains something to Liew (third right) as they stroll along the trek
as others look on.
KUCHING: Cycling enthusiasts can now ride their bikes in comfort at night at Le’ Park’s newly completed mountain bike and jogging trek.

“The 1.75km trek will be completely lighted up at night so the public can cycle along the trek, which is the first lighted mountain bike and jogging trek in Sarawak,” Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told reporters after opening the trail with Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato Patrick Liew here yesterday.

He said the trek would serve as another attraction in the city for cycling enthusiasts looking for a challenge when riding their mountain bikes.

“Though the trek is short at only 1.75km, it is nevertheless sufficient for those who enjoy cycling as it will provide a new and challenging experience,” he added.

The trek at Le’ Park, which is managed and developed by SLTA, is expected to provide the people with a designated place to ride their bikes at night in a safe environment. The place is also installed with spotlights to brighten up the area as well as closed-circuit television (CCTV).

“We have installed eight CCTVs with night vision and 12 spotlights along the trek so it will be quite bright for those who are cycling or jogging here,” said Liew.

According to him, the trek took three months to complete with an estimated cost of RM150,000.

“We did not cut down any trees but merely cleared the bushes to pave way for the trial. While that was being carried out, we found that there are over 100 species of plants along the way so we will be putting up their scientific names,” he said, pointing out that the trek had the potential to also serve as an attraction for visitors as well as photography opportunity for hobbyists.

Liew also noted that there were still some minor improvements to be carried out such as landscaping work and constructing a pavilion.

“Entrance to the trek will be landscaped as well and also there will be ample area for the people to park their bicycles,” he added.

Abdul Karim: No complaints about Sulaiman rarely visiting constituents

October 15, 2011, Saturday

KUCHING: Samarahan constituents are not complaining that their MP Dato Sri Sulaiman Taib rarely goes down to his area Asajaya, said assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“If there had been any big problem or complaint, the matter would have been in the open but so far his rare visit is not really an issue,” he said.

He said the physical absence of the Samarahan MP was not a big problem because whatever development projects and allocations for the area would be handled either by him or the assemblyman for Muara Tuang, Datuk Seri Mohammad Ali Mahmud.

“One good thing that I notice is the very good relationship between the administration, the District Office, Resident’s Office and government agencies with the elected representatives from both Muara Tuang and Asajaya so there had not been any problem.

“Whatever allocation he (Sulaiman) got, I am the one handling it. Whatever committees are supposed to he held by him, most of it are handled by me,” he said when answering reporters’ questions at a press conference after witnessing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) and Merdeka Palace Hotel and Suites here yesterday.

Abdul Karim who is Assistant Housing Minister said he was unsure why the former tourism minister had not been able to visit his constituency.

“I believe he has got some personal problem himself… I believe lah.”
