Jamilah’s landslide win a ‘thank you’ to Adenan, says party

PETALING JAYA: Jamilah Anu’s landslide victory in yesterday’s Tanjong Datu by-election was the constituents’ way of saying “thank you” to her late husband, former Sarawak chief minister Adenan Satem, said a senior PBB leader.

Speaking to FMT, PBB supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah congratulated Jamilah who contested the seat previously held by Adenan until his death last month.

Adenan was Tanjong Datu’s elected representative for more than nine years, having first won the seat in the ninth Sarawak state election in May 2006.

“The big win is also a clear manifestation and endorsement of Tanjong Datu voters towards Sarawak BN,” Karim said.

He added that although BN knew they would win the seat, what wasn’t expected was the margin of victory, with BN getting 96.5% of the votes.

Tanjong Datu voters will not be easily swayed by STAR

February 08, 2017

KUCHING: A PBB Supreme Council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the fact that all STAR candidates lost their deposits during the last state election was a clear reflection that Sarawakian voters were not stupid and easily swayed by rhetoric and fantasy of its president Lina Soo and her bunch of dreamers.

“She claimed MA63 is the core agenda of STAR in the last state election and this by-election.

Well said by Lina but not very well received by Sarawakian voters in the last state election and God willing, also in this by-election,” said Karim Hamzah as reported by The Borneo Post today.

Meanwhile State BN youth chief Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said with or without the by-election, the government had implemented various developments that had been promised to the people in Tanjong Datu.

“Our former chief minister (the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem) had tabled a plan for Tanjong Datu, what has been achieved with more planning for the people.

Abdul Karim chides opposition candidates in Tanjong Datu by-election

February 6, 2017

KUCHING: PBB Supreme Council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is not pleased with candidates from State Reform Party Sarawak (STAR) and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) contesting in the Tanjong Datu by-election.

Among others, STAR candidate Johnny Aput’s manifesto focuses on the autonomy of Sarawak based on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 which he claimed the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was too slow to pursue.

PBDS Baru candidate Rapelson Richard Hamit, on the other hand, said his main area of contention is the recognition of ‘pemakai menoa’ and ‘pulau galau’, which was ruled by the Federal Court recently as having no force of law.

Abdul Karim, without mincing his words, said Johnny probably thought he had an ‘Alladin Lamp’ that could expedite the state’s quest for greater autonomy.

“He better be ‘down to earth’ than to live in his own dreamland. Even if he wins the seat, which is near impossible, his sole voice will not even be heard by Kuala Lumpur. He can’t even open the doors of Putrajaya.

Abd Karim: Keep extremism at bay

November 10, 2015

SIBU: Extreme religious or racial views need to be kept out of Sarawak where harmony prevails.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this was because sensitive issues could stir racial and religious discontent.

“Religion has never been an issue in Sarawak and just do not start it…

“We have seen many religious bigots from Semenanjung. We hope we don’t have religious bigots from Sarawak too,” he added.

Hence, he said it was alarming and sad to see some people trying to champion and raise issues which could arouse anger like objecting to the appointment of a principal in SMK Sungai Paoh just because he was an Uztaz.

Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, said it had never been an issue on who should be principals, headmasters or teachers in Sarawak.

“We have been able to live with tolerance, understanding and respect with each other and this has also been the case with the schools.

Abdul Karim hopes SPDP-PRS merger for unity of Dayaks

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hopes the merger between Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) will be for the good of the rural Bumiputera community.

He said it would be good if both parties decided to merge as their leaders had always advocated unity of the Dayaks.

“I’m glad this idea (merger) has cropped up again, but hopefully it’s for real, that is, for the unity of the rural Bumiputera and not any other agenda,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Youth Development Minister, said in his WhatsApp message yesterday.

He was asked on a report yesterday that SPDP had resolved to work towards merger with PRS by enhancing cooperation and understanding with its fellow Barisan Nasional (BN) component party.

The resolution was made at SPDP supreme council meeting held at a leading hotel in Miri on Sunday and a statement issued by its supreme council member, among others, stated that the party would seriously reach out to PRS to realise the joint proposal made by the two parties some years ago.

According to Abdul Karim, the idea of merger between the two parties had been “on and off” many times, like the Malay saying ‘tengelam timbul’.

“If we look back at history, SPDP and PRS are like two children of the same parents that have parted ways,” he said, explaining that they were off-shoots of BN.

Dr Rundi scorches opposition’s effort

"Whether they can make inroad into any seat is yet to be seen." -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi yesterday warned the opposition not to expect the people to fall for its brand of politics.

He was asked if the coming state election would see a different political landscape following the emergence of many new political parties in the scene, and whether the state BN expect a tougher fight than that in the last state polls.

The five new newcomers are Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras), Parti Bumi Kenyalang, Peace Party and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) and Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak Bersatu (Persb).

“We don’t expect much difference and if any, there will be more confusion within the opposition if they think they can instigate/manipulate the Dayaks,” the Kemena assemblyman told The Borneo Post.

Making it a crowded affair, SWP announced that they would contest in seven state constituencies in the next state election though it is at least two years away.

Its president Larry Sng said the seven seats they intended to field candidates in included Pelagus, Meluan, Engkilili and Tamin whose candidates had been identified.

Of the four state constituency seats, two are held by BN with Dr Johnical Rayong (SUPP) as assemblyman for Engkilili and PRS Datuk Joseph Mauh, assemblyman for Tamin.

Some new political parties will die a natural death

September 5, 2013

SIBU: Some of the five new political parties in the state will die a ‘natural death’ a few years from now.

PBB Supreme Council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he believed this would happen because Sarawakians are intelligent and know which party is good for them.

The five new parties are Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras), Parti Bumi Kenyalang, Peace Party, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) and Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak Bersatu (PERSB).

“Personally, I don’t see the need for so many parties to vie for so few seats in Sarawak. But being a democratic country, we cannot stop anyone from setting up political parties. This is a fundamental right enshrine::alaysian constitution,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Abdul Karim said not all parties will get the people’s support.

“We may say it will split the people further or it will split the Bumiputras or Dayaks further, but we forgot one thing … the people have the final say.

“Don’t underestimate the intelligence and maturity of Sarawakian voters,” said Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman.
