S’wak govt grants Olympic swimmer Welson Sim RM91,500 for training

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has granted Olympic and national swimmer Welson Sim RM91,500 for his training expenses in Melbourne, Australia over the past four months since January, this year.

The 21-year-old Sarawakian swimmer from Jalan Foochow, here, who is currently undergoing intensive training in Melbourne, is aiming to participate for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“The state government will not let our athletes be left on the ledge, that’s why we have to come in,” said Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youths and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who was accompanied by Sim when met by reporters at the lobby of State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex, Petra Jaya here today.

Imbangi masa antara sukan digital dan fizikal: Abdul Karim

KUCHING: Minat melampau golongan muda masa kini terhadap permainan video membimbangkan kerana ia menyumbang kepada pembangunan fizikal yang tidak sihat.

Menteri Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah berkata, meskipun permainan video kini telah diterima sebagai salah satu bidang sukan, namun ia perlu seimbang dengan sukan fizikal.

“Disebabkan terlalu terdedah dengan permainan video, golongan muda dilihat lupa akan aspek pembangunan fizikal.

Bina badan: Buda menerima durian runtuh

KUCHING: Jaguh bina badan Sarawak, Buda Anchah menerima durian runtuh daripada kerajaan negeri berupa wang tunai berjumlah RM8,000 sebagai insentif kejayaan beliau pada Kejohanan Bina Badan dan Sukan Fizikal Dunia Ke-10 di Chiang Mai, Thailand, Disember lalu.

Menteri Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah menyampaikan sendiri cek insentif tersebut di pejabatnya, Bangunan Baitul Makmur di sini kelmarin.

Turut hadir Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, Hii Chang Kee, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Sukan Sarawak (PSS) Dr Ong Kong Swee dan Koordinator Majlis Sukan Negeri Sarawak (MSNS), Villaivan Jee Edmond.

Sarawak to host world badminton amateur tourney

KUCHING: Former and current badminton superstars like Malaysia’s Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat as well as Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat are expected to grace the 26th World Masters Badminton Championship Kuching at the Sarawak Sports Complex, Petra Jaya from Oct 31 to Nov 3.

More than 3,000 shuttlers, officials and supporters, friends and family members from more than 20 countries will converge on Kuching for this event specially organised for non-professional players aged 25 and above.

It is also the largest amateur badminton tournament in the world.

“We are indeed honoured that Kuching, Sarawak was given the trust to be the host for this World Chinese Badminton Federation (WCBF) tournament which is held outside China for the third time after the Philippines and Thailand.

Sarawak pertama di Malaysia miliki ‘aerodome’

KUCHING: Sarawak akan menjadi negeri pertama memiliki fasiliti aerodome yang akan digunakan sebagai venue penganjuran Kejohanan Badminton Masters Dunia Ke-26 diadakan dari 31 Oktober hingga 3 November 2019.

Menurut Menteri Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, pembelian stadium buatan dengan kos bernilai RM2.6 juta itu telah dibuat dan ia dijangka mula dipasang pada Julai depan di perkarangan parkir bersebelahan Stadium Negeri, Petra Jaya.

“Untuk mendapatkan 3,000 atlet bermain bermakna kita memerlukan gelanggang yang besar kerana gelanggang sedia ada tidak mencukupi.

Kuching marks six months to go before 9th World Para Swimming Championship

KUCHING: In six months’ time, Kuching will be making history as the first city in ASEAN region and outside Europe to host the 9th World Paralympic Swimming Championship at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya.

“This is an important event for all of us in Sarawak especially for Kuching City because it is the first of its kind to be held outside Europe and the ASEAN region,” said Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“The Sarawak government has welcomed the staging of the event here because it also coincides with our Visit Sarawak Campaign 2019 which was launched on New Year Eve,” he said in a press conference at Stadium Negeri yesterday.

Sibu hosts Sarawak Youths Day 2018 celebration

KUCHING: Sarawak Youths Day 2018 will be celebrated for 2 days on November 16-18 at the Sibu Indoor Stadium.

Minister for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said various activities will be held in conjunction with the celebration.

“The objective of celebrating the Youths Day is to acknowledge the contributions of youths as part of the development agenda in the state.

Persediaan kontinjen Sarawak memuaskan

KUCHING:Menteri Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah telah menyuarakan kepuasan terhadap persediaan yang sudah dilaksanakan kontinjen negeri ke Sukan Malaysia Ke-19 (SUKMA XIX) yang akan diadakan di Perak dari 11 hingga 22 September depan.

Beliau berkata demikian semasa pertemuan dengan Pembantu Chef-de-Mission (ACDM) setiap persatuan sukan yang diadakan di sini semalam.

“SUKMA XIX hanya tinggal 22 hari lagi dan kita mesti bersedia menghadapi cabaran yang akan datang ketika pertandingan bermula,” katanya pada pertemuan itu yang dihadiri 90 peserta termasuk Menteri Muda Belia dan Sukan Datuk Snowdan Lawan yang juga Chef-de-Mission (CDM) dan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Sukan Sarawak Dr Ong Kong Swee.

Karim ketuai delegasi Sarawak ke New Zealand


KUCHING: Menteri Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah mengetuai delegasi Sarawak ke Auckland dan Wellington, New Zealand pada Selasa hingga hari ini.

Delegasi itu disertai Menteri Muda Belia dan Sukan Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib, Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Pelancongan, Kesenian, Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan Hii Chang Kee, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Sukan Sarawak (SSC) Dr Ong Kong Swee dan delegasi lain.

Objektif lawatan itu fokus kepada dua bidang dan bertujuan memberi pandangan lebih mendalam mengenai strategi pembangunan pelancongan New Zealand dan mekanisme ‘Tourism Satellite Account’ (TSA) untuk bidang pelancongan.

High performance centre in 3 years

This was revealed by Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youths and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday.

“Near our sports complex here, we have got a school and we want to change that school into a sports school.

KUCHING: Sports tourism will get a major boost next year when Sarawak play host to the World Para Swimming Championships and the Asia Masters Athletics Championships.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Karim Rahman Hamzah, who launched the two events at Riverside Majestic Hotel here yesterday, said both championships will coincide with Visit Sarawak Year (VSY) 2019.

He added that Kuching will make history as the first city in Asia to host the World Para Swimming Championships from July 29 to Aug 4. The event, which will be held at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, is expected to attract 800 athletes and 400 officials from 80 countries. It will also boost Malaysia’s image in the promotion of inclusiveness and equality.

500 armwrestlers for 3rd international championship

KUCHING: Armwrestling fans are in for a vein-bulging, forehead-sweating treat this Jan 19 and 20 as around 500 armwrestlers from over 20 countries compete in the 3rd International Charity Armwrestling Championship at Premier 101 Commercial Centre along Jalan Tun Jugah here next weekend.

Organised by the Sarawak Armsport Association (Sasa) and Premier 101 Community Club with support from Malaysia Armsport Association (MyArms) and Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, the annual event is expected to be a grand affair as these armwrestlers will no doubt have the audience gritting their teeth while cheering on their favourite armwrestler.

“There are going to be around 200 international armwrestlers from countries such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, Kazakhastan, Vietnam, Brunei, India, Nigeria, Korea, Belarus, Indonesia, Ukraine, Turkey, Italy and the Philippines competing during the two-day event.

KUCHING: The Premier 101 Int e rnat ional Char i t y Arm Wrestling 2018 will be held on January 19 – 20, at Premier 101 Commercial Centre here. The tournament, which is the third edition since 2016, offers a total cash prizes worth RM31,300 which is the highest in Asia.

In part, it is also the biggest of its tournament in Sarawak which involved the participation of 21 countries, namely Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Australia, China, Brunei and others. 

“There will be more than 200 athletes from overseas and over 300 athletes from Malaysia to take part in this tournament and will be coming,” said Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a press conference at Baitulmakmur in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Beliau gembira dengan kira-kira 500 penyertaan daripada atlet luar negara dan tempatan berkata, penganjuran pertandingan bertaraf antarabangsa itu bakal memberi impak positif dari aspek pelancongan.

“Kita berharap acara tahunan ini akan bertambah lebih besar setiap tahun,” katanya pada sidang media bagi menghebahkan pertandingan tersebut di sini semalam.

Karim leads delegation to World Para Swimming Championship

MEXICO: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is leading a delegation from the Ministry and Malaysia National Paralympic Council to Mexico to witness the 2017 World Para Swimming Championship.

The purpose of the visit was to have a hands-on experience on the running of the World Para Swimming Championship. This follows Sarawak winning the bid to host the 2019 Championship in Kuching.

The Minister took the time to witness the competition, tour the technical set-up and meet officials from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to discuss the technical and logistical support needed.

Karim lauds ABAS for hosting Asian School championship

KUCHING: Teams from 10 countries are currently participating in the 18th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship which started on Saturday and ends this Friday at the Megalanes at Batu Kawa here.

Besides Malaysia the other teams are from Australia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah officiated at the championship’s opening ceremony at the Megalanes on Saturday.
