Samarahan Regatta 2019 to add 20-paddler category

KUCHING: The Samarahan Regatta 2019 from July 12-14 this year will introduce a 20-paddler category in the competition.
According to Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the new category would be for villages in the area and among the 11 categories in the three-day event.
“The Samarahan Regatta to be held at Kampung Tambirat, which was last held in 2015, is back again to prepare competitors for the coming Sarawak Regatta,” he told reporters here yesterday at a news conference to announce the event.

Sarawak to bring human skeletons found in Niah Caves back from US

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is in the midst of a discussion to bring back the over 100 human skeletons, which were excavated from Niah Caves, from the United States.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the skeletons, which were kept at a university in Nevada were brought to the USA for study by scientists.
He said the study had been completed and the authority in Nevada had agreed that the skeletons be returned to Sarawak.

Providing airfare subsidy to Sarawakian students commended
KUCHING: The provision of airfare subsidy to Sarawakian students going back home during festive seasons is a commendable effort by the Sarawak government, says Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The subsidy, according to him, would enable more Sarawakian students who are studying in Peninsular Malaysia, to spend more time with their families during the festive holidays.
However, he could not comment about this programme further without having the full details on such policy.
‘Five-million tourist arrival’s target remains achievable for Sarawak’
KUCHING: Sarawak is confident of achieving its target of five million tourist arrivals this year, despite AirAsia’s plan of discontinuing its Kuching-Shenzhen route.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believes that Sarawak should still be able to welcome tourists from China coming in via Sabah and towards this end, his ministry is making certain arrangements with Sabah to facilitate this.
“Aside from that, tourists from China can still come to Sarawak via Kuala Lumpur,” he told reporters after the launching of ‘AirAsia Sarawak Campaign Livery’ by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday.

ATA 2019 able to highlight Sarawak on world’s tourism map – Abdul Karim
KUCHING: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah looks forward to having the guests of the 23rd Asian Television Awards (ATA) here spread the word about ‘Sarawak hospitality’ and ‘Visit Sarawak Campaign’ in their home countries.
In this respect, he hopes that they would do Sarawak a little favour by ‘telling their folk back home’ about how much they have been enjoying the ‘Sarawak experience’ here.

KUCHING: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believed Asian Television Awards (ATA) would remain relevant in the region as it provided a common avenue for talented producers from Asia.
As such, he said it was vital for Sarawak to support the awards because it could showcase the diverse selection of coveted programmes ‘from Asia and beyond’.
“The awards are also good testimonies on the promising future of Asian programming standards and potential, while encouraging television producers from Asia to excel further in order to enter the global stage,” said Karim, as reported by TheBorneoPost, when giving his welcoming speech during the 23rd ATA gala dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night.

KUCHING: The state government is organising various interesting activities in conjunction with the New Year Countdown 2019 celebrations and the launch of Visit Sarawak Campaign Kuching Waterfront on Dec 31.
Minister for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the entertainment segment will start at 5pm, where members of the public will be entertained throughout the evening until after midnight with captivating activities such as a fireworks display, musical water fountain showcase and stage performances by national and local artistes.
He said other fascinating elements like a water show, lighting up of the Darul Hana Bridge, 3D imaging and a video show from the Sarawak Tourism Board culminating with the fireworks display at the stroke of midnight are also not to be missed.

PBB veep wishes UPP ‘all the best’ in name, logo rebranding exercise
KUCHING: A Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) leader wishes ‘all the best’ for United People’s Party (UPP) in whatever new name and logo that the latter wishes to choose.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also PBB vice-president, sees UPP leaders as those being truly committed to Sarawak, even though the party is not among the founding members of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
“Although they’re not in GPS as a founding member, they subscribe to the same cause which GPS is fighting for,” he said in a statement yesterday.
UPP expects to unveil its new name and new logo at the opening ceremony of its extraordinary delegates conference (EDC) today, set to take place at the Thian Court of Crown Towers at Jalan Pending here.

KUCHING, Nov 24: About 42 per cent of the gold medals and 33 per cent of silver medals that Sarawak won in the recent Sukma XIX in Perak were contributed by first-timers.
In revealing this, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believed this new pool of athletes could deliver more gold medals to the state if given proper training as well as exposure.
“As you know, last year we have also revived Sukan Sarawak or SukSar, in short. My ministry had revived the organising of SukSar with the main aim of providing a good avenue for our young athletes to compete in a high-level sports carnival,” he said at the appreciation ceremony for the medalists and the Sarawak Contingent to Sukma Perak 2018 at a leading hotel here today.

Sarawak govt conducting study to gauge views, needs of youths

SIBU: The Sarawak government through its Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports is carrying out a Youth Index Study to gauge the views and needs of Sarawak youths.
Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the study, which began August last year, involves at least 14,000 respondents from 40 districts across Sarawak.He added that the study is done together with the Institute For Youth Research Malaysia (Iyres).
Sarawak is the third state in the country to carry out such study, he noted.
