Karim hopes Transport Ministry will reconsider its decision

November 10, 2017

KUCHING: The State Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hopes the Transport Ministry would reconsider its decision to cease operations for six routes in Sabah and Sarawak by next year to make way for commercial airlines.

He said: “Ceasing operations for these routes will not be good for business, tourism and movements within these states.

"It is hoped that the Transport Ministry and Mavcom will look into this matter deeply and not cease operation just based on load (factor) as it will greatly hinder the growth and development of towns where these flights are connected.”

Our electoral system just as good, says Abdul Karim

SIBU: Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has blasted Lanang MP Alice Lau for urging the government to follow the American system of a fixed-term election.

“Why must the American fixed term system be seen as the best system in the eyes of YB Alice Lau? Is she saying that the British system we have been practising all these years has many flaws?

“Whatever system in practice, there are bound to be some good and some bad – there is no perfect system. Malaysia was once colonised by Britain and we are very familiar with the British electoral system.

“It is not 100 per cent perfect but we have been able to have good proper elections since ‘Merdeka’ (independence). Just because some voters are not able to plan their holidays, our whole system is flawed? What is YB Alice trying to say?” said the assistant minister, who is Asajaya assemblyman, when asked on Monday.

He was reacting to Lau’s statement that a fixed-term election system where the election would occur on a set date, would be more transparent besides saving time, manpower and costs.

She had called for the Federal Constitution to be amended so that the current election system could be changed.

Lau further claimed that although the next general election was only due in 2018, many had been predicting it would be held next year – an inconvenience to the electorate’s holiday or business plans, according to her.

‘Better for BN if Chinese united under one party’

SIBU: There is a higher chance for Barisan Nasional (BN) to wrest back the urban seats in the next state election if the Chinese remained united under one party.

Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi, who is state BN secretary-general, was asked if the coming polls would see urban seats returning to BN as well as the swing of support from the Chinese community to the coalition, given the soaring popularity of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

“There is swing to BN, definitely but if the Chinese are united under one party, the chances of winning would be better,” Dr Rundi, who is Kemena assemblyman, told thesundaypost.

In the 2011 state election, BN won 55 of 71 seats.

PBB secured all 35 seats it contested in, while SUPP only managed six out of 19; PRS eight out of nine; and SPDP six out of eight. Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is Asajaya assemblyman, personally hoped to see the urban seats returning to BN in the next state election.

He said urban seats to be contested by PBB such as Satok, Nangka and Jepak would definitely be going to BN but those eyed by SUPP, or maybe united People’s Party (UPP) would present a tough fight for the candidates.

“We do hope that the soaring popularity, openness and transparency of the chief minister in his short stint so far, he could bring more urban voters to lean towards BN.

No place in S’wak for Opposition of ‘noise-makers’

January 3, 2016

The Barisan Nasional (BN) is not saying that Sarawak does not need an Opposition which can act as a check-and-balance but it’s against one which “simply makes noise”.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak has taken the position that the state does not need an Opposition which “simply makes noise”. “We are not saying that Sarawak does not need an Opposition which can act as a check-and-balance,” said Nangka Assemblyman Annuar Rapaee. “What we are saying is that we don’t need an Opposition which simply makes noise.”

Annuar along with Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Stephen Rundi were expressing the hope in the local media that the urban seats would return to the ruling coalition but acknowledged that the Chinese, in that case, would have to unite under one political party in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak.

“There’s a better chance of BN taking back the urban seats if the Chinese were united under one political party,” said Stephen who is also BN Sarawak Secretary-General.

He noted that Chinese “had begun swinging back to BN given Chief Minister Adenan Satem’s popularity” but thinks the trend wasn’t pronounced enough. “The Chinese must unite under one political party in the BN for the coalition to win back the urban seats.”

Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya Assemblyman and a PPB Supreme Council member, expects his party to retain its urban seats such as Satok, Nangka and Jepak but concedes the ostensibly multiracial but Chinese-led and dominated Sarawak United People’s Party (Supp) will have a tough fight in other urban seats against the DAP. “We hope that Adenan, given his popularity, because of his emphasis on openness and transparency, can play a big role in wooing back urban voters.”

“The Chief Minister is a leader for all communities. It’s not often that we get a leader like this.”

In 2011, the last state election, BN won 55 of the 71 seats contested. The number of seats has since increased by 11 to 82.

‘Carnival to engage with 30,000 youths to transform them through quality activities’

December 5, 2015

SIBU: The Youth Transformation Carnival is one of the platforms for the government to reach out to engage youths, Assistant Youth Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said yesterday.

The carnival themed ‘From Youth for Youth’ involves 30,000 youths across the divisions and districts. It’s held during the school holidays to get youths to be involved in quality activities.

“Many health programmes and activities have been lined up to connect with the younger generation. It is our hope to develop youths to be better citizens and get them to interact with each other,” Abdul Karim said when asked about the two-day Sibu division Youth Transformation Carnival which begins today.

This programme initiated by Ministry of Social Development (KPS) involved all relevant agencies, whether state or federal.

“It will be held in all divisions in Sarawak,” said Abdul Karim who is Asajaya assemblyman. The programme includes briefing and workshops, exhibitions, sporting activities, performance, talent show and appreciation ceremony.

BN confident of retaining Nangka

SIBU: Barisan Nasional’s (BN) grassroot machinery has gone full throttle to ensure the Nangka state constituency remains a BN stronghold as PKR keenly eyes the seat.

State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said they had read PKR’s game plan in attempting to establish a support base there.

“We are fully aware of their intention and strategies and our grassroot machinery had been working extra hard to make sure Nangka remains in BN.

“We are confident that the team lead by Dr Annuar (Rapaee) will deliver the seat for BN in the next (state) election,” Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was reacting to PKR Sibu branch chief Abdul Raafidin Majidi’s statement that the party had put up a candidate in Nangka in the next state election to wrest the seat from BN.

Abdul Raafidin further claimed that the candidate identified had been going to the ground, especially to Kampung Hilir and Kampung Datu to assist people such as single mothers and the elderly.

The state PKR youth chief, however, added that they would probably not contest other seats in Sibu like Bawang Assan and Pelawan, giving way to DAP.

January 11, 2015

“Kita sering terdedah isu seperti mendewa-dewakan kebebasan individu tanpa batas, gerakan cuba mengiktiraf perkahwinan sejenis, perkahwinan berlainan agama, isu murtad, ajaran sesat, gaya hidup LGBT merangkumi biseksual, transgender, gay, lesbian serta budaya songsang lain.

Chong flayed for statement on Election Commission

January 7, 2015

SIBU: Several state BN leaders blasted Sarawak DAP chairman for criticising Election Commission (EC) as a tool of Barisan Nasional (BN), saying the opposition had no sincerity in serving rural folk.

Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen had claimed the delineation exercise showed that EC was serving only BN by helping the ruling coalition to consolidate its position and power base.

Describing EC’s action as a blatant disregard for the fundamental principle of fairness, Chong said the EC might as well apply to join BN.

Proposed new village in Sibu to have about 860 lots

November 13, 2014

AN estimated 860 housing lots will be provided in the proposed village Silviculture Batu 11, Oya Road in Sibu.

However, Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the project is still at an early planning stage and the criteria to select applicants for the lots has yet to be decided.

“But priorities will be given to Kampung Datu villagers depending on guidelines that we will frame it later on,” he said in responding to questions raised by Annuar Rapaee (BN-Nangka).

GST rally to sow seeds of hatred against government – Abdul Karim

SIBU: The opposition and organisers of the protest against Goods and Services Tax (GST) are already pre-empting that prices of goods and cost of living are going up, even before its implementation.

Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who observed this said he believed the rally was an attempt to sow seeds of hatred and distrust towards the government.

“The fact that 160 countries have already imposed GST without much hassle and outcry shows that GST is a good tax system,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He added that he could understand if this protest was held when the imposition of GST had clearly shown prices of goods were going up, causing a burden.

As such, he opined that the protest was nothing more than an opposition demonstration under disguise of a protest against the GST.

“I am sure majority of those who attended the gathering are opposition supporters.

“When I see the pictures of the front liners in the gathering, I can see they seem well prepared for ‘battle’ with the authority.

Karim - Victory indicates people accept leadership of Adenan as the CM of Sarawak

“The voters of Balingian have made a good choice and I am sure the BN state government and the new YB will not forget them.” Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: Voters in Balingian rejected PKR as they want development, stability and harmony that only Barisan Nasional (BN) can deliver several state BN leaders concluded yesterday.

They said the people realised that the opposition were all about politicking rather than rendering sincere service to people.

To state BN youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof, the big win was a reflection of many factors.

“The trust of the people in Balingian not only on the policies of BN but the hope and belief that BN can bring benefits to the people in Balingian in all aspects of development from physical to human development and welfare of the people.

“More importantly, unity, stability and harmony was what the people voted for,” Fadillah, who is also Works Minister and Petra Jaya MP, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said the landslide victory showed that the people rejected the opposition.

“Yes, indeed that was exactly what we told our people in Balingian and they proved and showed that the ‘Pakatan Pembankang’ has no place in their hearts…better forget about “impian Sarawak”…it is not mere politicking but sincere service to the rakyat that is important,” added Dr Rundi, who is also Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications).

Education one way to stop illegal races

February 7, 2014

SIBU: Education on road safety is one of ways to put the brakes on illegal racing, suggests Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said ‘bike racing’ on public road could not be stopped by only building racing tracks for them.

“Racing is a form of ‘escapism’ for some bikers during their teenage years. As they get older the craze dies down.

“We need to educate them on road safety and divert their attention to other forms of recreational activities if we need to solve this problem.

“Parents also need education to guide their children away from (illegal) bike racing.

“The police and Road Transport Dept also need to be firm.

“Building racing tracks for them is only a small solution,” Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, said.
