Minister lauds decision to reinstate three Sukma sports

SIBU: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has again expressed satisfaction with the decision to reinstate Taekwondo, Sepak Takraw and Weightlifting in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Perak this year.

He was commenting on National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail’s recent statement that the Sukma Supreme Committee had decided to reinstate sepak takraw, taekwondo and weightlifting in the 2018 Sukma.

It was not fair to the three sports to be dropped abruptly, Karim said.

Karim okay with Khairy's suggestion

SIMUNJAN: The tiff between Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz and Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah should be resolved in the spirit of Barisan Nasional, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

The Barisan Youth chairman said he believed both individuals should sit down to resolve their differences, adding that it is important the solution should be based on the spirit of Barisan comradeship.

It was reported that Nazri had labelled Abdul Karim, who is Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister, as a "greenhorn" over his remarks on the implementation of tourism tax.

"I just discussed the issue with Sarawak BN Youth chairman Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, and I hope it will be resolved in the Barisan spirit of musyawarah (discussion). We have the principle of comradeship and consensus, and that the issue should not be extended to the media," said Khairy.

He said that he believes the issue will be settled as it is a policy matter which can be discussed between two ministers.

Karim lambasts movement calling for Taib’s resignation

KUCHING: Peninsula-based Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) was given a tongue lashing yesterday for planning a campaign aimed to call for the resignation of Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawakians do not need West Malaysians without in-depth knowledge about the state’s political history and its  multi-racial harmonious culture to ‘teach’ them on how to manage the state.

He pointed out that SAMM, which is closely related to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth movement, should just focus on building up good racial and religious harmony in West Malaysia, and leave Sarawak alone.

‘Proposed National Youth Blueprint 2020 commendable’

September 28, 2013

SIBU: The envisioned National Youth Blueprint 2020 is laudable as it reflects the seriousness of the Ministry of Youths and Sports in enhancing the role, contribution and potential of youths.

In saying this, Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday assured of full cooperation and support to realise the vision.

Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman was asked to comment on the Bernama report stating the Ministry of  Youths and Sports was in the process of implementing the blueprint.

Its minister Khairy Jamaludin reportedly said in the parliament that it would give special focus and emphasis to young people in all aspects from education, self-development, identification of trends and values, their issues to the government delivery system.

“On the local scene, state government and Ministry of Social Development (KPS) will work alongside the federal ministry and their agencies to make sure the youth agenda as envisioned by Khairy becomes a reality.

“We will see how the federal programmes can be done to suit our local scene as not all programmes in Semenanjung might be suited for Sarawak.

“In general, we are supportive of Khairy’s vision and will fully give cooperation to make it a reality,” Abdul Karim told The Borneo Post.

PBB Youth wants more exco members

 July 29, 2013

“BN needs to engage youths and understand their feelings and aspirations if it wanted youths to support them. It is not an easy task." -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: PBB may soon amend a PBB Youth regulation to increase the number of exco members.

PBB Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof said the proposal was meant to enable more youth members to hold positions in the party.

“It will thus give them the opportunity to contribute at the state level,” he said when asked about measures to woo more youths to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) side.

Bernama has quoted Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaludin as saying BN needed to have more support from youths in order to do better in the next general election.

Khairy reportedly said the opposition had a lot of young members, and BN should do likewise as it was important to ensure the voice of youths remained strong and loud.

Fadillah, who is also state BN Youth chief and Petra Jaya MP, said: “In Sarawak, we work for all the people. There are programmes to tackle all segments of society.”

He added there would always be programmes to engage youths, and this ranged from consultations to listening to their views and expectations.

Khairy’s appointment appropriate - Karim

KUCHING: The appointment of Khairy Jamaluddin as Youth and Sports Minister, which was announced recently by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, is appropriate as it fulfils the youth’s aspirations of a young, capable and proactive minister to run the ministry.

“Khairy, UMNO Youth Chairman, is a young and capable leader. He is also energetic and charismatic and his appointment will attract more youth to be involved in the government youth-related programmes,” said Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Karim, who is also the chairman of Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs’ Chamber (DUBS), said this to reporters after officiating DUBS Kuching Branch’s annual general meeting (AGM) held at the State Youth and Sports Complex Auditorium in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here yesterday morning.

On his hopes of furthering collaboration between the state and federal youth and sports ministries, he said having known Khairy personally, he was confident that much could be done to upgrade and transform the state’s youth and sports agenda.

Khairy’s appointment augurs well for S’wak

KUCHING: The appointment of Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar as the Minister of Youth and Sports would enable the state to strengthen further its coordination with the federal government to ensure the state is not left behind in the planning of programmes and projects development.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who knows the national Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth chief personally, believed that the state could overcome many development issues with Khairy at the helm.

“The appointment of Khairy as the Minister of Youth and Sports is spot on considering that he, being an UMNO and BN Youth chief, is still young. Being a person in his 30s, I see him as a minister who is pro-active and healthy which makes him very qualified to lead and bring the goals of youth development in this country to a higher level.

“Furthermore, I can see that he is a person who loves sports. His appointment would enable the country to meet the aspiration and needs of the youth in this country,” he told reporters when met before the start of the Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS) Kuching branch annual general meeting at the Youth and Sports complex here yesterday.

When asked if there were any major programmes and development planning that the state would immediately focus on following the new appointment, Karim said all existing programmes in both the urban and rural areas would be continued.

He pointed out that various youth and sporting programmes were being organised throughout the year and expected these activities to be enhanced further, considering the already strong working relations between the state Youth and Sports Department with its federal counterpart.

Khairy, 37, is a former Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president II. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, United Kingdom and a Master’s degree in Legal and Political Theory from the University College London.

Sarawak BN needs 'real cyber troopers' - Karim

Posted on March 18, 2013, Monday

BN Sarawak cyber troopers needed more grooming and exposure on how to be ‘real cyber troopers'. - Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: The state BN’s cyber troopers are up and ready to ‘shoot’ down the opposition’s baseless allegations and lies as cyberspace has become a new political battlefield, especially with the looming General Election.

This is particularly so with the bulk of new voters being young voters who are IT-savvy and cyberspace has become the main source of information for the young generation.

State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said yesterday they are fully prepared to fight the opposition in cyberspace.

“We have intensified our cyber troopers to counter the allegations and lies made by the opposition,” assured Dr Rundi, who is also Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications).

He was asked to comment on BN Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin’s statement that the cyberspace represented the major platform to ensure victory for BN in the coming election.

Khairy was quoted by Bernama to have said more than 80 per cent of the approximately three million new voters were the generation aged below 40, who obtained their information from the social media and blogs as well as various cyber applications besides the mainstream media.

Pakatan’s latest proposal yet another empty promise — Karim

KUCHING: Pakatan Rakyat’s proposal to remove excise duties imposed on vehicles in order to slash its prices was concocted just to ‘demonise’ the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said yesterday that Pakatan were experts in making promises, but none of it had ever materialised.

“Pakatan has raised issues such as abolishing PTPTN loan and that varsity education should be free. They also promised a 20 per cent oil royalty to Sabah and Sarawak if they were to take over the federal government.

“They also promised a Dayak chief minister for the state and a deputy prime minister post from both East Malaysian states. They even promise that the country will become a welfare state.

“They promise pay increase, they promise, promise, promise! Of course, all laymen would love these promises. But my question is what happened to those promises made before the 12th general election?

“To date, their promises have not been fulfilled,” said Abdul Karim, who is also assistant minister of youth development, when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was asked to comment on PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli’s recent statement that Pakatan would abolish excise duty on cars as part of its election promises. Recently, Pakatan had also promised to abolish PTPTN loans as well.

Stop trying to put wedge between me and Fadillah, says Karim

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah wants the party’s youth members to stop putting a wedge between him and PBB youth leader Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

Karim, who was formerly PBB youth chief, revealed that there is a group within the wing that is unhappy with Fadillah’s leadership.

He said when the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation did not rebuke Umno youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin for calling on Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down, this group took advantage of the situation.

This dissenting group, he said, is not only trying to create chaos within PBB’s youth wing but also out to cause a rift between him and Fadillah.

“We know there is a certain naughty group within PBB youth exco who wish to put a wedge between me and Fadillah. My advice is for youth leaders to stop this nonsense and unite.

“Those renegade dissenters have big plans to take over the PBB youth leadership, but no need to worry. Those with wicked hearts and minds will not go far,” said Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman.

Karim had earlier warned that any form of slander involving him would attract legal action.

PBB concerns with rumours Fadilah's supporters vs Taib's supporters

May 5, 2011

KUCHING: PBB vice-president Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said he feared that the party would plunge into disunity by rumours of factions within it.

He said it was unfair to say that factions existed, for instance, between supporters of PBB Youth leader Datuk Fadillah Yusof and party president Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Daud cautioned that such allegations by members could destroy PBB, which is the state’s BN backbone.

“Let us stop this labelling and accusations that there is one faction supporting Datuk Fadillah and another supporting the Chief Minister. Between the two, the YB Chief Minister (Taib) is too high in rank when compared to Fadillah,” the Tupong assemblyman told reporters after a meeting of new BN State Legislative Assembly (DUN) members at PBB headquarters here yesterday.

He made the comment following claims that factions existed in the PBB Youth wing.

Youth leaders were said to be divided when Fadillah was accused of failing to satisfactorily rebuke national BN and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for implying that Taib should step down in order to save BN from another political tsunami in the parliamentary election.

Echoing the Umno Youth chief’s sentiment was MCA vice-president Senator Gan Ping Sieu, who is Deputy Youth and Sports minister. Gan had urged Taib to pass the baton to another BN leader as soon as possible.
