Dr Xavier told not to tamper with Sarawak, Sabah laws

SIBU: Federal Minister of Water, Land and Mineral Resources Dr Xavier Jayakumar has been told not to sweep aside laws practised in Sabah and Sarawak as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

Minister for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youths and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday pointed out that Dr Xavier’s suggestion of combining the land codes of Sarawak and Sabah with that of Malaya into a single National Land Code reflects his ignorance and lack of sensitivity to the natives of Sabah and Sarawak, whose rights over Native Customary Land are ‘recognised’ by their Land Code but not in the National Land Code.

In this regard, he added that Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister (DCM)  Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas had correctly stopped and advised Dr Xavier on his inappropriate suggestion.

Sarawak is also Petronas' political master - not only Federal Government

Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah welcomed the State Government's decision to freeze all new applications for work permits for Petronas' personnel posted to the state.

He said the measure was definitely a good and welcome news to all Sarawakians, and showed that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was truly serious about this matter.

“I’m very happy to hear that all new employment permits from Petronas have been frozen until particulars sought by the state government are furnished.

"Petronas must know that their political master is not just the federal government, but the state government too," he told a local English daily yesterday.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Youth and Sports Minister, reiterated that Sarawakians had been ‘insulted’ by Petronas for too long and wanted this to be stopped.

“I have said that we do not want Petronas to ‘insult’ us.

"They have insulted us for far too long on this employment of Sarawakians matter and we want them to change their policy. Lest, we will have to tighten it on our side."

Sarawak leaders not happy

Sarawak leaders unhappy state loses full minister’s post in new cabinet lineup, accept PM’s prerogative in federal ministerial appointment

KUCHING: The federal cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday is a disappointment for the state, as the minister’s post vacated by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas was not filled by a Sarawakian.

Uggah, who stepped down as Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister to take up the post as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister, said many had expected the replacement for his federal post to come from the state.

“I am very disappointed that no MP from Sarawak was considered to take over my former position. We believe one of our MPs is qualified enough to be appointed. I am speaking on behalf of Pesaka wing in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).”

Uggah, who is PBB senior vice president and still the Betong MP, contested in the last state election in Bukit Saban constituency where he won by 4,599 vote-majority in a straight fight.

He was appointed Deputy Chief Minister in the new state cabinet lineup announced on May 13 and he was also given the portfolio of Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Economy.

Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong who was appointed Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism is the only appointment from Sarawak.

Prior to yesterday’s federal cabinet announcement, speculations were rife that Kapit MP and Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi or Saratok MP Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom would be appointed to take up the post vacated by Uggah.

KUCHING: Election fever in the state is beginning to heat up as rumours are swelling that there is a possibility Betong MP Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas might swap seat with Bukit Saban assemblyman Robert Lawson Chuat in the coming state election.

However, PBB president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was decidedly coy on the matter and merely hinted that there was a possibility that this might happen.

“There is always the possibility but it does not only apply to the state elected representative for Bukit Saban,” he told a press conference after chairing the PBB Supreme Council meeting at the party’s headquarters yesterday.

This led reporters to ask if other MPs from Sarawak including Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof might contest during the state election.

Not one to be persuaded so easily, Adenan, who is also Chief Minister, quipped: “Your guess is as good as mine.”

The rumour mill has been on overdrive for the past two weeks as there are whispers from the grassroots that Uggah’s move to contest the state seat is to pave the way for him to become the next deputy chief minister.

Another rumour heard from the grapevine was that Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang might vacate his Layar seat to make way for his son Gerald Rentap.

-Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing has attributed his state honour carrying the title ‘Datuk Amar’ to the tremendous contributions of his party to the political development of Sarawak.

Masing, also Minister of Land Development, said he was receiving the honour on behalf of PRS, a Barisan Nasional coalition party which had been reaching out to the community especially in rural areas.

“First of all, I would like to thank the state government for giving me this award, which is are flection of PRS contributions in Sarawak’s politics. Even though the award was given to me, the honour is meant for the entire party,” he told journalists after receiving his award during an investiture at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin conferred awards to 39 recipients in conjunction with his birthday celebration, which was earlier held at Stadium Perpaduan.

Also being conferred ‘Datuk Amar’ was Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Douglas Uggah Embas, who said the honour would not be his if not for the strong support of people in his constituency.

Uggah, who is Betong MP, thanked them for their undivided support during the 13th general election held May this year.

One of the nine recipients of Panglima Gemilang Bintang Kenyalang (P.G.B.K), which carries the title ‘Datuk’, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it was a great honour to be bestowed the award in the year Sarawak marked 50 years of independence and progress in Malaysia.

KUCHING: Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg retained his post as president of Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) which also saw the election of a new deputy-president and three new vice-presidents.

State Legislative Assembly (DUN) deputy speaker Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn who was formerly a vice-president took up the role as deputy-president to replace Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas.

The Betong MP decided not to seek re-election due to his commitment in Putrajaya as Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities. Abang Johari mentioned that Uggah will continue to help with the development of Saberkas as the latter has planned to set up a palm oil seedling project which will involve the association.

The three newly elected vice-presidents are Youth Development Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi and Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali who is the first woman elected as a vice-president of Saberkas.

‘1 country, 2 systems’ - Divisive and Dangerous?

August 19, 2011

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing described United Borneo Front (UBF) founder Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan’s advocacy for Malaysia to be “one country, two systems” as divisive and dangerous.

He said the proposal was against the objective of the formation of Malaysia and should be rejected outright by all peace-loving Malaysians.

“His (Dr Jeffery) view is very dangerous for nation building because we already are moving forward as one nation under 1Malaysia.

“To think otherwise means that he wants to break up this country. This, we should never allow,” Masing told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

Jeffery had said that the federal government should allow Sabah and Sarawak to be developed based on their own capitalist economic and political systems.

He explained that the two states should be allowed to have their own systems as they were different from Peninsular Malaysia.

“Our rights are not the same as theirs. Our geographical condition is different and we do not have economic growth as the other states in the peninsular have,” said Jeffery, adding that the 20 Point Agreement had clearly stated that Sabah and Sarawak were equal partners with Malaya and not one of the states in Malaysia.
