S4S’ demands “unreasonable, dangerous”, says Abdul Karim

August 20, 2018

KUCHING, August 20: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has blasted Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) for issuing a six-month ultimatum to the state government to reclaim full autonomy from Putrajaya under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

The ultimatum formed part of a 10-point recommendation that S4S had forwarded last Saturday (Aug 18) to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and Abdul Karim.

S4S had also emailed the same so-called manifesto to all the members of the State Legislative Assembly

PRS, Masing should not dictate GPS structure, setup’

June 18, 2018

SIBU: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing should not dictate on how Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) structure and setup should be.

According to Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, GPS has just been set up and yet to be fine-tuned.

“GPS is even not registered with Registrar of Societies (ROS) yet. Why use the media to put in your terms and conditions?

“This are matters that are supposed to be discussed in close-door (meetings) among ‘members’ who aspire to be members and a part of this coalition,” he said today.

Outcome of Pujut rep’s case proves democracy still works — Abdul Karim

June 18, 2017

KUCHING: The High Court’s decision to reinstate Dr Ting Tiong Choon as Pujut assemblyman clearly shows that democracy is working in the country, says Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

According to him, the verdict by the High Court judge serves to dispel the long-time claim by the opposition that all ‘organs’ in the government are biased.

“It (the High Court’s decision) shows that democracy is working in Malaysia, despite the claim by the opposition all these years that that all ‘organs’ in the government are biased,” he said yesterday in response to the decision delivered by High Court Judge Datuk Douglas Christo Primus Sikayun, stating that Dr Ting is not disqualified as a member of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN); hence, he remains as the assemblyman for Pujut.

However, Abdul Karim pointed out that the ball is now in at the Home Ministry (KDN)’s court with regard to the status of a Malaysian who applied for and obtained citizenship of another country.

He also questioned the validity of one’s Malaysian citizenship once that person has a citizenship of another country – whether it stays valid or is automatically terminated.

Be rest assured - Sarawak in safe hands

January 14, 2017

KUCHING: The appointment of Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg as the state’s sixth chief minister has been hailed as a wise and appropriate choice, political leaders from both sides of the political divide in the state said.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, said Abang Johari was not only the deputy president of the state’s largest political party Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), but he also had three decades of political experience.

“His political acumen is second to none when it comes to the administration of a multi-racial and multi-religious country like Sarawak.

Masing, who is Baleh assemblyman, assured PRS would give Abang Johari their full and undivided support towards his administration of the state, in line with what the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem would have wanted.

“Adenan’s dream for rural-biased development of Sarawak will continue with Abang Johari – in such approach of development, PRS is very certain,” he said, wishing Abang Johari all the best in looking after Sarawak and its people in the years ahead.

Many other political leaders also expressed their views and advice on the appointment of Abang Johari as chief minister and gave their thumbs up for the choice.

“It is said that political greatness is the ability to translate wisdom into action on behalf of the people. To do this requires a combination of moral virtues, practical wisdom and public-spiritedness.”

Be rest assured – Sarawak is in safe hands under his stewardship. He (Abang Johari) was the late chief minister’s (Adenan) confidant, coming from the same Kampung Bandarsyah and has wide experience as a minister and leader. He is close to all the communities in Sarawak and has always been very fair. –Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister for Housing

Leaders welcome PM’s readiness to discuss MA63

November 13, 2016

KUCHING: State Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders have welcomed the readiness of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to discuss the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the readiness shown by Najib showed that the Prime Minister is practical.

“I am sure he can feel how the people of Sarawak and Sabah feel. It is good for him to reciprocate and come up with this statement that he is willing to discuss with Sabah and Sarawak leaders on MA63 if this agreement had been misinterpreted by Putrajaya all these years,” he said yesterday.

“I am sure this statement from him will go a long way in building a more prosperous and united Malaysia.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, who is Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, said that the form of discussion between the federal government and state governments of Sabah and Sarawak must done in the right manner.

“In what form (will the discussions be held); within the four walls, or in the open via the State Legislative Assemblies of Sabah and Sarawak. This we need to know,” he said.

“I would prefer the discussion on MA63 within the four walls. Then, Putrajaya and the two East Malaysia states will have serious and meaningful discussions on important matters without input from the opposition, who will certainly politicise the matters just for the sake of publicity.”

More ‘ayes’ to making S’wak equal partner in Federation

October 25, 2016

Senior leaders of Sarawak BN parties back Chief Minister Adenan Satem's motion on Article 1(2) to be moved at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.

KUCHING: Two Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders see the proposed motion in the Sarawak Assembly on Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution as a timely move.

“Malaysia was formed based on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and related constitutional documents. All parties must respect these documents,” said a PBB Supreme Council Member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He argued it would be wrong to take the position that constitutional documents on Malaysia were no longer relevant with the Federal Constitution in place, Free Malaysia Today reported - quoting The Borneo Post report.

The bottom line, he said, was that many of Sarawak’s rights (as those of Sabah) had been eroded over the years.

“This has to be corrected,” summed up Karim. “The proposed motion is the first step,” he was quoted as saying.

Two earlier motions, on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and oil and gas, were passed unanimously.

Sabah and Sarawak, before the amendment, were equal partners of Malaya in the Federation of Malaysia.

Aid in store for Sukma silat gold medallist

August 12, 2016

KUCHING: A Sukma silat gold medallist Olivia Chong who was reported to live in a dilapidated house together with her family in Kapit will receive assistance soon.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said although there was a ‘means test’ to see if one was eligible for government housing projects, ‘one who has brought fame to the state or nation would definitely carry much weight for approval’.

“We will try to assist all needy families as much as possible including those who have brought fame to the state. But we have to be practical and rational in matters like this.

“If gold medallists are assisted, what about silver or bronze medallists and those who have trained for years to represent the state, but could not get any medal,” Abdul Karim wrote in his Whatsapp.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Minister for Housing, said it was not right to always equate medals with ‘must help’ situation by the government.

It was mentioned that Olivia, 19, who also won a Sukma silver medal in Perlis two years ago, was living in a rented wooden house at Jalan Airport, Kapit with her parents and three other siblings.

During a surprise visit to the family recently, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar James Masing, said the government should help Olivia and her family.

Dr M has lost his charm, says state BN politicians

July 16, 2016

KUCHING: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new party would not have an impact in the state in the coming general election.

A Supreme Council member of PBB Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said: "...people are already fed up with Dr Mahathir, who is fighting for something so different from (what he fought for) when he was the prime minister."

"And now he is trying to pretend to be an angel,” added Abdul Karim in reference to the infamous ‘Lalang Operation’.

Abdul Karim was giving his comment to a local english daily recently.

Meanwhile the Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. James Masing was reported to have similar view on Mahathir.

He regarded the former premier as ‘having lost his charm’.

Masing believed that with the two Borneo states being the fixed deposits for BN, the coalition would continue to triumph in the next general election.

Sarawak leaders not happy

June 28, 2016

Sarawak leaders unhappy state loses full minister’s post in new cabinet lineup, accept PM’s prerogative in federal ministerial appointment

KUCHING: The federal cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday is a disappointment for the state, as the minister’s post vacated by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas was not filled by a Sarawakian.

Uggah, who stepped down as Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister to take up the post as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister, said many had expected the replacement for his federal post to come from the state.

“I am very disappointed that no MP from Sarawak was considered to take over my former position. We believe one of our MPs is qualified enough to be appointed. I am speaking on behalf of Pesaka wing in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).”

Uggah, who is PBB senior vice president and still the Betong MP, contested in the last state election in Bukit Saban constituency where he won by 4,599 vote-majority in a straight fight.

He was appointed Deputy Chief Minister in the new state cabinet lineup announced on May 13 and he was also given the portfolio of Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Economy.

Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong who was appointed Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism is the only appointment from Sarawak.

Prior to yesterday’s federal cabinet announcement, speculations were rife that Kapit MP and Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi or Saratok MP Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom would be appointed to take up the post vacated by Uggah.

Abdul Karim: No way DAP can form unity government with BN

KUCHING: The state Barisan Nasional (BN) will never accept Democratic Action Party (DAP) into its fold as the idea will not augur well with the coalition’s policies, considering the different objectives and set-up between the two political entities.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said both Barisan and DAP have their own history and objectives which are completely different which could prove difficult if the two were to work together in a unity government.

Although nothing is impossible in politics, the Asajaya assemblyman believes the possibility for a unity government between the state Barisan and the opposition party, given the present political scenario, is not feasible.

“DAP, through the years of its struggle, has been seen as a chauvinist, racist party. It might have tried to reach out to the other races in the last few years, to make it look ‘multiracial’, but the fact shows that it is a predominantly Chinese-based party. Unfortunately, the party’s struggle is also seen as more towards one particular race as well.

“Nevertheless, anything is possible in politics but looking at the present political scenario, prospect of a coalition government between BN and DAP looks almost nil and impossible,” Abdul Karim told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

He was responding to state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s comment that his party did not rule out the possibility of forming a unity government with the Sarawak BN at the state level.

Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP, was reported in a national Chinese daily as saying that as long as he is DAP Sarawak chairman, the party will not join BN. However, he would not rule out 100 per cent the possibility of forming a unity government with Barisan. He added that in many countries, the opposition cooperates with the ruling parties at state levels but fights at the federal level.

'Not wrong to revisit Malaysia Agreement'

December 09, 2015

THAT’S HILARIOUS: Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah (left) shares a light moment with Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg prior to attending the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday. — Photo by Tan Song Wei

IT is not wrong for the state to revisit what its forefathers have agreed to when the Malaysia Agreement was penned on July 9, 1963.

Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah said there were various factors that ought to be looked into especially when Sarawak attained independence through Malaysia more than 50 years ago.

“What they have agreed to at that time, what safeguards the state has got, whether these terms and conditions they have agreed to at that moment of time…were they followed through by the leaders of post Malaysia after the leaders that helmed this beloved nation of ours through the years?

“These are natural questions that come to us especially now with the increase in social media where people are able to access information easier and with a population with a good eduction background, there’s a lot of questions being asked,” he said in his debate to support the motion calling on the state government to be fully committed in safeguarding the special interest of the state which was tabled by Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Abdul Karim (BN Asajaya), who seconded the motion, said Sarawakians had experienced many levels of unhappiness throughout the years on issues concerning the rate of infrastructure such as the condition of schools, hospitals, clinics, roads, electricity and clean water supplies in the state, and the insufficient funding given by the federal government among others.

“There is also unhappiness of certain policies such as the usage of English, the use of the word ‘Allah’, and the right to practise one’s faith through the years as well as unhappiness over erosions of the rights of our territory especially on the ‘continental shelf’ which even before we formed Malaysia, are recognised as ours.”

“I won’t go into the very details on what are the areas that have been eroded but suffice for me to say that some of these matters have been highlighted by Our Right Honourable Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem) in his speeches across the state, in Peninsular Malaysia as well as by members of this august House,” he said.

Kerajaan negeri berhak halang Nurul Izzah masuki Sarawak

KUCHING: Kerajaan negeri mempunyai sebab menghalang Naib Presiden Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Nurul Izzah Anwar memasuki Sarawak.

Bring back public confidence, Abdul Karim tells police

December 2, 2015

KUCHING: The police have to do their part in bringing back public confidence that the country is governed by the rule of law, in view of the two assault cases that happened in the state recently.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah gave this view when commenting on the assault case involving Tuai Rumah Jambai from Bekelit in Bekenu and public assault of two youths at a mall here on Sunday.

“I congratulate the swift action taken by the police in apprehending the suspects in the assault case in Miri and the one at a shopping complex in Kuching. I have to admit that the public are alarmed by what is happening and thanks to social media for bringing this matter to the open.

“The police have to do their part in bringing back public confidence that the country is governed by the rule of law and not law of the jungle. We cannot let thugs and hooligans rule the street and create an atmosphere of fear to the public,” Abdul Karim told The Borneo Post yesterday.

On the assault case in a shopping mall, Abdul Karim said state Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman should not brush aside the incident as an isolated case and not a case involving criminal gangs.

“He should instead make sure that the long arm of the law will reach out to all offenders wherever they are. Do not let the public lose hope on law enforcement agencies.”

Sabtu had told reporters yesterday that the public assault here on Sunday was an ‘isolated case’ which was not in any way linked to gangsterism.

Abd Karim chides critics of Ustaz’s appointment

SIBU: The teaching fraternity should be allowed to decide on what is best for the children, says Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Politicians from both the government and opposition including ministers who portray extreme and racist views should stay out of the fray. How could we condemn and pre-judge someone just because he is an Uztaz, a Malay or a West Malaysian as being incompetent to teach our children?

“Let this extreme, racist and unbecoming outlook be erased from all Sarawakians and we give respect to the teaching profession for their untireless effort to teach our children. Look at the case in depth.

“This principal is not someone who is thrown into the wilderness of Sarawak from nowhere. He has served in Sarawak for umpteen years and not just brought in yesterday. He knows the Sarawak diverse culture and multi-religious tolerance and it’s wrong to crucify him just for our political gain. Give him a chance to prove himself,” Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Adding on, the assistant minister said just because the person is a west Malaysian, does not mean he is less sensitive or lacks knowledge of local culture.

Condemning him as not being able to assimilate himself in community events is prejudging him even before he even commences his work, he opined.

“It is just unfortunate that after so many years of being Malaysian, we still have this mentality around and unfortunately even among those who sit in the chair of power.
