KUCHING: Automobile and motorcycle enthusiasts in Sarawak are encouraged to form clubs which can act as a platform to promote goodwill, said Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday.
He explained that with the right mix of activities, such clubs can eradicate social ills among youths while at the same time letting others in on their hobby.
“Automobile and motorcycle clubs can play their role in improving harmony within society. Therefore, I hope those who have passion and great interest for such hobby form clubs because these clubs can attract youths and together you can organise healthy activities,” he said, prior to flagging off the ‘Merdeka Convoy’ at Le’Park yesterday.
The convoy was the climax of the two-day Merdeka Auto Carnival (MAC) organised by Sarawak Auto Enthusiasts Society (SAS) which saw close to 300 cars of various models ranging from Masserati, Ferarri, Lambhorgini, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda and K-cars displayed at Le’Park.
More than 200 cars participated in the ‘Merdeka Convoy’ led by the Kuching Supercar Club as they circled the city and back to Le’Park covering an estimated 53km to instill patriotism in conjunction with the 50th Malaysia Day celebrations.
Other exciting events during the carnival which ended yesterday included a street party, mountain biking competition and an array of other activities.

Cycle under night lights at Le’ Park

NEW CYCLING TREK: Karim (right) explains something to Liew (third right) as they stroll along the trek as others look on. |
KUCHING: Cycling enthusiasts can now ride their bikes in comfort at night at Le’ Park’s newly completed mountain bike and jogging trek.
“The 1.75km trek will be completely lighted up at night so the public can cycle along the trek, which is the first lighted mountain bike and jogging trek in Sarawak,” Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told reporters after opening the trail with Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato Patrick Liew here yesterday.
He said the trek would serve as another attraction in the city for cycling enthusiasts looking for a challenge when riding their mountain bikes.
“Though the trek is short at only 1.75km, it is nevertheless sufficient for those who enjoy cycling as it will provide a new and challenging experience,” he added.
The trek at Le’ Park, which is managed and developed by SLTA, is expected to provide the people with a designated place to ride their bikes at night in a safe environment. The place is also installed with spotlights to brighten up the area as well as closed-circuit television (CCTV).
“We have installed eight CCTVs with night vision and 12 spotlights along the trek so it will be quite bright for those who are cycling or jogging here,” said Liew.
According to him, the trek took three months to complete with an estimated cost of RM150,000.
“We did not cut down any trees but merely cleared the bushes to pave way for the trial. While that was being carried out, we found that there are over 100 species of plants along the way so we will be putting up their scientific names,” he said, pointing out that the trek had the potential to also serve as an attraction for visitors as well as photography opportunity for hobbyists.
Liew also noted that there were still some minor improvements to be carried out such as landscaping work and constructing a pavilion.
“Entrance to the trek will be landscaped as well and also there will be ample area for the people to park their bicycles,” he added.

Instil culture of hating crimes — Abdul Karim
May 28, 2012
KUCHING: Teenagers and youths in the state are encouraged to join Rakan Cop and Malaysian Crime Prevention Club as part of the efforts to promote crime prevention activities among the younger generations.
Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan said that the early involvement of teenagers and youths in the two bodies would be the best platform to prevent them from being involved in crime.
In his text of speech read out by Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah when launching the state-level Crime Prevention Month 2012 at Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre here yesterday, the Senior Minister also said that it was everybody’s responsibility to maintain public safety and peacefulness in the country.
On a personal note, Abdul Karim who was representing Mawan at the function said, “We must try to ensure there is a culture of working together in our community to prevent crime and how nice would it be if we were to live in a society where crime rarely happens.”
He said he believed these were achievable considering there were already countries such as New Zealand as well as Japan which had very low crime rate.
Due to lesser crimes, the number of police personnel required in the countries was very small, he added.
“The culture of the communities there is such that they work together to ensure crime are not committed. If it happens, the community will work hand-in-hand to ensure that it does not happen again,” he said.
He added he was made to understand that New Zealanders would despise those who build fences around their houses because they think people who do so were trying to isolate themselves from society, which he said demonstrated the strength of their community’s spirit in preventing crimes.
In urging the people to be more proactive in crime prevention, Abdul Karim said they must try to instil the culture of hating crime and having the desire to see that the city was safe from criminal activities.
Also present during the ceremony were state police commission Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, Kuching City North Commission Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association president Datuk Patrick Liew, India Street Pedestrian Mall chairman Dato Wee Hong Seng, state information director Resat Salleh and Kuching district police chief Roslan Bek Ahmad.

Christmas cheer for 160 less fortunate children
December 18, 2011
IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS: Abdul Karim and Liew with all seven representatives from the societies and associations at the eighth Annual Christmas Party 2011 at the Hills Shopping mall. |
KUCHING: Bringing Christmas joy to more than 160 less fortunate children was the least Insurance Society of Sarawak (PIS) could do – they were treated to a Christmas party at the Hills Shopping Mall yesterday.
The children were from Sarawak Cheshire Home, Sarawak Association for the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled Children (Perkata), Salvation Army Children’s Home, Salvation Army Boy’s Home, Kuching Autistic Association, Sarawak Children Cancer Society and Sarawak Thalassemia Society.
They were accompanied to the party by their guardians.
“This is a very meaningful event which is greatly appreciated by the state government,” said Assistant Minister of Social Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who officiated at the event. He said a part of our society had the misfortune to go through lives without parents or the use of limbs.
“Every child is an asset to the state and should be treated equally,” said Abd Karim while urging more individuals to help those who are less fortunate.
Abd Karim, who is also the Assistant Minister of Housing, stressed that these less fortunate children should be properly guided to become part of society and grow up to be useful citizens.
Meanwhile, PIS president Dato Patrick Liew said: “A little giving goes a long way in making a difference especially when it can light up a smile in the children’s faces.”
