Karim: Helping the needy an emphasis in Islam

KUCHING: The teaching of Islam emphasises that those who have the ability and wealth should lend a hand and assist others, especially the needy and unfortunate individuals.

Assistant Minister of Housing and Youth Development Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said in this context, bringing joy and lessening the burden of their Muslim brothers and sisters in the holy Ramadan month would also count.

“While we are preparing to celebrate the coming of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, please bear in mind that there are still lots of people out there who are less fortunate than us,” Karim pointed out.

He said this in his speech when officiating at the Bubur Lambuk and Bubur Pedas Programme which was jointly organised by Beras Nasional (BERNAS) and Sarawak Youth National Organisation (SABERKAS) at BERNAS office, Green Road, here yesterday.

“Even though, it’s just a free handout container of Bubur Lambuk or Bubur Pedas, to the some of the recipients, it would at least an additional food placed onto their tables when breaking their fast.

“Therefore, the effort initiated and taken by BERNAS and SABERKAS in bringing the Raya festivity mood and joy should serve as an example to the other parties as well,” the Assistant Minister pointed out.

Karim, who is also Saberkas Vice President said that through the joint programme, the SABERKAS members participating in the event would feel the first-hand experience interacting with the people.

“With these exposures, particularly when conducting similar programmes outside the cities, they would felt the sense of appreciation for what they have as they will realise that more people are much less fortunate than them,” he added.

The BERNAS/SABERKAS Bubur Pedas/Lambuk distribution programme had reached its 10th year this year where each year BERNAS will donate RM50,000 for the purpose.

This year, similar programmes had been organised in 25 locations in Sarawak.
