Karim and Fatimah against abolition of BR1M

August 28, 2018

KUCHING: The federal government’s decision to phase out the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) in the near future does not sit well with several leaders of the Sarawak government.

In fact, they described the decision to cease the aid, which was first introduced by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in 2012, on the grounds that there were elements of corruption on it as unreasonable.

The Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the distribution of BR1M has been transparent, which is meant to help reduce the burden of recipients in meeting their daily needs.

“It’s not given to any Tom, Dick and Harry but only to those who qualify and meet the criteria. I don’t see any element of corruption in this handout because who the recipients support is never used as the yardstick for disbursement.

Abdul Karim: Everybody has roles to play in eradicating drug menace

April 29, 2017

SIBU: Enforcement agencies should not be left to shoulder all the responsibilities in eradicating drug abuse.

According to Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, it is everyone’s responsibility, especially the parents, to keep the negative influence away.

Abdul Karim, who is also the state chairman of the National Association for the Prevention of Drugs (Pemadam) said: “The community, including district officers (all DOs are the district Pemadam heads), schools, parents-teachers associations, village security and development committees (JKKKs), mosque, church and temple committees, political parties, youth movements, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and people’s elected representatives have roles to play.

“The people, especially the youths, need to be taught to hate drugs and see drug abuse as an evil deed that could destroy the community and the nation if left unchecked,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The Asajaya assemblyman was commenting on a recent disclosure, where a random urine test carried out by National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sarawak on 99 secondary students at four schools in Lawas between January and March this year, showed that 23 of them tested positive for drugs.

Sarawak leaders slam Tasek Gelugor MP

KUCHING: Leaders from both sides of the political divide in the state have slammed Tasek Gelugor member of Parliament Datuk Shahbudin Yahaya for his outrageous statements on rape victims and child marriage.

When debating the Sexual Offences Against Children Bill 2017, Shahbudin, a former Syariah Court judge, claimed as some girls reached puberty as young as the age of nine, it is not impossible for them to get married as they were ‘physically and spiritually’ ready, adding there was ‘nothing wrong’ with a rape victim marrying the rapist, as it could serve as a ‘remedy’ to the increasing number of social problems.

Assistant Minister for Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he was left totally aghast by Shahbudin’s statement.

“If this is how he looks at things, such as allowing a nine-year-old kid, who has probably just reached puberty, to be married, then this MP needs to be given counselling,” he said as reported by The Borneo Post today.

However, the Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports said there is a need for a review on the age considered statutory rape, as children today mature earlier and many engage in consensual sex with their partners even before reaching the age of 16.

February 3, 2017

KUCHING: The number of drug and substance abuse cases involving students is low but the problem must nevertheless be nipped in the bud before it becomes serious.

Chairman of Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) Sarawak Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said there was the need to reach out further to educate students and youngsters on the danger of drugs.

“However, we have yet to move beyond Kuching and Samarahan due to budget constraints. We are aware that there are such cases in Bintulu, Limbang, Lawas, Pusa and Beladin,” he said.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Minister for Housing, said this during a courtesy call on Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah at her office here yesterday.

He said most of the incidents in schools were related to substance abuse such as sniffing glue and misusing prescription drugs like Nospan (common drug used for the treatment of cough, cold and other respiratory tract disorders).

Female crime gangs in state unlikely, says Abdul Karim

KUCHING: Women in the state are not likely to start their own organised crime syndicates but the authorities must not be complacent.

In giving the view, Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah however conceded that “petty girls bully groups” definitely occurred in some schools.

To address the problem of bullying, he urged parents and Parents and Teachers Associations to be vigilant.

“Organised gansterism is unlikely among female students in the state, but petty bully groups definitely is there in some schools so parents and PTAs and school administrators should be more vigilant on what goes on in schools,” he said in his WhatsApp message yesterday.

He was commenting on a recent media report that quoted United Malaysia Crime Prevention Organisation (UMCPO) reporting that there were 1,300 female triad leaders in the country.

The organisation, working closely with the Home Ministry also revealed that at least 12 per cent of the country’s membership bases of notorious gangs are females.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Housing Minister, opined that the problems in schools boiled down to how the schools managed the discipline of their students.

He said statistical findings based on improper surveys could not be used as reflection of the people’s feeling.

“I was made to understand that this portal merely asked 100 people- 50 from Sarawak and 50 from Sabah and who are those 50 from Sarawak? If they were ask people from Asajaya,I think all of them will say ‘no’ to getting out of Malaysia,” he said when met at his Hari Raya Open House in Jalan Astana here yesterday.

Hamil luar nikah serius

November 2, 2011

Statistik meningkat, kebanyakan ‘keterlanjuran’ berlaku musim cuti sekolah

Hadir sama, Menteri Muda Pembangunan Sosial Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Men-teri Muda Kebajikan Robert Lawson Chuat dan Pengarah Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Negeri Noriah Ahmad.

Karim appointed as assistant minister

By RINTOS MAIL rintos@thestar.com.my

KUCHING: Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has announced his full Cabinet line-up, keeping all the existing ministers in their respective portfolios in a concerted effort to improve and accelerate service delivery in the state.

All the existing assistant ministers are not affected in the reshuffle as they have also been retained in their respective portfolios.

The reshuffle yesterday, done five months after the state Barisan Nasional was returned to power, saw seven new assistant ministers appointed to fill up posts made vacant after the state election in April.

Announcing the changes, which come into effect tomorrow, in his office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday, Taib said he had also decided to promote three ministers, namely PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Masing, SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan and SUPP deputy secretary general Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh to the rank of Senior Minister.

However, in as far as their respective ministries are concer- ned, Masing is still designated as Land Development Minister; Mawan, because his ministry has been renamed, is Social Develop- ment Minister, while Wong is Second Finance Minister as well as Local Government and Com- munity Development Minister, another ministry which has been renamed.

Taib said the role of the Senior Ministers was to cordinate and supervise the changes set to take place in the various ministries.

He said he had decided to keep all the experienced ministers in their respective portfolios because he wanted them to continue supervising the machinery of the government under their ministries as well as the new assistant ministers.
