KOTA SAMARAHAN: Local and foreign cyclists from more than 20 teams competed in Samarahan Bike Challenge 2017 which started and ended at Summer Mall in Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa here yesterday.
They raced in the men’s elite 42 km criterium, veteran all star 36 km criterium, Sarawak Closed 42km criterium, Junior men’s 30km criterium, and women’s 30km criterium.
Themed ‘The Road Warrior,’ the fourth edition of the event was organised by DTTG Samarahan, Samarahan District Office and Sarawak Bicycle Association.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah felt the event deserves support as cycling is one of the core sports competed in Sukma.
Apart from grooming new talents, organisers also aim to promote Kota Samarahan as a sport tourism destination and a destination in criterium bike events (closed circuit).

KOTA SAMARAHAN: About 120 cyclists took part in the 2016 Samarahan Bike Challenge yesterday.
Taking off in front of the Summer Mall here, they competed in five categories – Elite, Junior, Veteran ‘All Stars’, Ladies and the Summer Mall Closed.
Jointly organised by DTTG Samarahan, the Samarahan District Office and the Sarawak Cycling Association, the event offered cash prizes totaling RM10,800.
Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who flagged off the races, expressed the hope that the event could be a future calendar event in the state.
He advised organisers to work closely with the Ministry of Tourism to further advance their main objective of popularising cycling to the younger generation, especially students, students of higher education institutions and local communities.
The event could be organised on a larger scale in future to more international cyclists, he hoped.
Major sports events coming to Sarawak
KOTA SAMARAHAN: More tournaments, especially national and international ones, look set to take place in Sarawak as the state government wants to ensure that sports venues do not turn into white elephants.
According to Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, after the 2016 Sukma hosted by the state in July, the state government is determined to maximise these facilities while reaping the benefits.
“Organising more tournaments seem to be the right way for these sports venues and facilities. Not only will it help utilise out sports venues and facilities, it will also contribute to local sports development,” he told reporters during the 2016 Samarahan Bike Challenge held here yesterday.

Mohd Ali moved to Stakan, Karim to defend Asajaya
April 4, 2016
KOTA SAMARAHAN: As speculated, Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mahmud will be fielded in the new constituency of Stakan in the coming state election.
“For Muara Tuang, leave it to me to decide. Do you agree with me?” he asked the crowd, which was immediately met with voices of their approval. Talks are rife that PBB supreme council member and former senator Datuk Idris Buang
would be fielded in Muara Tuang. Muara Tuang is no strange land to Adenan who was its assemblyman from 1978 to 2006.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who announced this during the launching of PBB Samarahan election machinery in Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan yesterday, however, did not reveal the candidate for Muara Tuang. With Mohd Ali, who has been Muara Tuang assemblyman for two terms, moving to Stakan, this means Muara Tuang will have a new face from PBB.
Adenan also announced that Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will defend Asajaya, the seat he has represented since 2001. Asajaya, Muara Tuang and Stakan are under the Samarahan constituency.

On another matter, Adenan reiterated that PBB would contest in 40 seats in the coming polls.
He added that if PBB won all 40 seats, the party could get a simple majority to form the government with several seats from other BN components, but he said that was not what the party was aiming for. “We don’t want a simple win. We want the win to be as big as possible.”
He also mentioned that the 11 new seats were being distributed based on 5-2-2-2 formula with the other three BN components.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Work on the Batang Samarahan Bridge has finally started after a 14-year wait and is scheduled to be completed in 36 months.
By January 2018, people of Kota Samarahan as well as Asajaya and Sadong Jaya will no longer have to spend an hour on the road travelling between these areas.
The RM93.88 million project is set to benefit some 240,000 residents in the division, boosting socio-economic activities in the areas concerned with the new shortened travelling distance.
According to Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, the new bridge spanning 774 metres complies with the British Standard 5400 code of practice.
While it is a dual carriage bridge, a three-km pedestrian path connected to the bridge will also be built.
At the earth-breaking ceremony yesterday, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem said he hoped the contractor and supervisor of the project would make certain that work on the bridge will be carried out as planned.
“Residents here have been waiting for this bridge to happen for over 14 years. Therefore, we hope to see full commitment dedicated to this project.”

Women show strong support to Rubiah as BN candidate
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Womenfolk made their presence strongly felt on nomination day for the Kota Samarahan seat Saturday.
As expected, it is a straight fight between Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu – Barisan Nasional’s (PBB/BN) Rubiah Wang and PAS’s Abang Ahmad Kerdee Abang Masagus for this semi-rural constituency of mostly Malay voters.
First-time candidate Rubiah was accompanied by Wanita BN chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and PBB Women deputy chief Datuk Fatimah Abdullah who is also state minister for Welfare, Women and Family Development.
Also on hand to lend support were Muara Tuang assemblyman Dato Sri Mohd Ali Mahmud, Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and a 1,000 strong contingent of blue-shirt supporters carrying PBB and BN flags.
Many arrived as early as 8am on chartered buses and had earlier gathered at Masjid Darul Taqwa about half a kilometre from the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre which was the official nomination centre.
Meanwhile, Abang Ahmad Kerdee was accompanied by a smaller group of 100 green-clad supporters carrying banners, flags and signs.
Rubiah and Abang Ahmad Kerdee arrived at the nomination centre at 9am on the dot, accompanied by their respective supporters who waited more than an hour outside the civic centre for their candidates to be confirmed.

He said he based his confidence on the candidate’s service record, which made him or her familiar with the problems and needs of the people there.
“We know the capability of this candidate and we know the person is hard working and familiar with the needs of the local community.
“So there should not be any problem for the candidate to give the best service to the people in Samarahan,” he said at the state-level 1Malaysia Community Carnival here last Saturday.
