‘Pouring cold water’ tantamount to disloyalty to the state

SIBU: State DAP and PKR are slammed for ‘pouring cold water’ on whatever efforts are put forth by the chief minister and state BN to claim the state’s rights which have been eroded over the years.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president, said it was sad to see these opposition leaders taking such a stand.

He was reacting to the press statements from state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen and state PKR vice chairman See Chee How.

Abdul Karim against citizens-initiated referendum

May 5, 2017

KUCHING: There is no necessity to introduce a citizens-initiated referendum (CIR) in the state, said Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. According to him, elections held in the state every five years is already a form of referendum.

“As it is, the rakyat has already mandated their elected representatives to speak on their behalf in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and Parliament.

“Why do we need to waste time and money holding ‘people’s election’ or referendum again for every important issue that arises?” he questioned.

Abdul Karim was commenting on Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How’s plan to table a private member’s bill at the coming DUN sitting to enact a state law to provide for the holding of CIR in Sarawak.

The state PKR vice chairman who submitted his private member’s bill last week said the indicative referendum will show the opinion of Sarawakians on specific questions but will not be binding on the government.

Be rest assured - Sarawak in safe hands

January 14, 2017

KUCHING: The appointment of Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg as the state’s sixth chief minister has been hailed as a wise and appropriate choice, political leaders from both sides of the political divide in the state said.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, said Abang Johari was not only the deputy president of the state’s largest political party Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), but he also had three decades of political experience.

“His political acumen is second to none when it comes to the administration of a multi-racial and multi-religious country like Sarawak.

Masing, who is Baleh assemblyman, assured PRS would give Abang Johari their full and undivided support towards his administration of the state, in line with what the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem would have wanted.

“Adenan’s dream for rural-biased development of Sarawak will continue with Abang Johari – in such approach of development, PRS is very certain,” he said, wishing Abang Johari all the best in looking after Sarawak and its people in the years ahead.

Many other political leaders also expressed their views and advice on the appointment of Abang Johari as chief minister and gave their thumbs up for the choice.

“It is said that political greatness is the ability to translate wisdom into action on behalf of the people. To do this requires a combination of moral virtues, practical wisdom and public-spiritedness.”

Be rest assured – Sarawak is in safe hands under his stewardship. He (Abang Johari) was the late chief minister’s (Adenan) confidant, coming from the same Kampung Bandarsyah and has wide experience as a minister and leader. He is close to all the communities in Sarawak and has always been very fair. –Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister for Housing

It is still proper to call Sarawak as a state - Karim

July 11, 2016

Abdul Karim (third left) in a group photo with See (fourth left), national PKR Women vice president Voon Shiak Ni (left), state PKR Women chief Nurhanim Hanna Mokhsen (second left) and other guests.
KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah opined a call by the SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian for Sarawak to be referred as a region in Malaysia and not as a state as ‘very subjective.’

He  believed it was still proper to call Sarawak a state because it was a part of Malaysia.

“Sarawak can still be considered a state, but it is a state within a union … within a confederation. So, whether we should call ourselves just Sarawak or a state, to me that is minor,” he told reporters when met at his Hari Raya open house at his residence here yesterday.

“What is more important here is when we signed the (Malaysia) Agreement, there were certain rights that we agreed upon, and these are the rights that have diminished for the last 53 years. We are trying to get them back.”

Stating that the matter was quite sensitive, he opined it was now more important to focus on the rights of the state as Sarawak was one of the signatories to the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“Unlike the federated and unfederated Malay states that are Peninsular Malaysia, they came in as signatory to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 as one entity. We (Sarawak) came in as another entity, Sabah came in as another, and Singapore, too.

“The way I see it, strictly from a legal aspect, it should be called a federation of states.”

Sarawak BN rep says high time to revisit MA63

December 9, 2015

Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak denies that it’s trying to jump on the “popularity bandwagon” created by the Opposition on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and claims that in fact Chief Minister Adenan Satem led the way.

KUCHING: An assemblyman who seconded a motion in the Sarawak Assembly calling on the Federal Government to comply with the intentions of the Founding Fathers in Borneo, as expressed in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), said that it (compliance) was an idea whose time has come.

“It’s high time to revisit the agreement. There’s increasing pressure on the Sarawak Government in the social media. People are raising the MA63 and asking all sorts of questions. The government has to respond.”

Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Hamzah, also the Assistant Minister of Housing, disclosed that the Sarawak Government has since set up many committees on MA63.

He pointed out that it cannot be denied that there was a lot of unhappiness in Sarawak about the territory’s state of under-development despite over half a century of Federation with the peninsula and Sabah. “There are also questions on oil and gas rights, education, the status of the English language and freedom of worship. We are very unhappy that Sarawak, like Sabah, has been dragged into the Allah issue in the peninsula.”

Abdul Karim was explaining the motion introduced this week by Baleh assemblyman James Masing, also Sarawak Minister for Land Development. “After more than 50 years, there are various factors that ought to be looked into and considered.”

“Has MA63 been complied with?”

The Assistant Minister said that he doesn’t want to dwell on areas that have been eroded over the years and added that these have been raised by Chief Minister Adenan Satem. “Adenan has raised these issues in the State Assembly, in public in Sarawak and in the peninsula.”

'Not wrong to revisit Malaysia Agreement'

IT is not wrong for the state to revisit what its forefathers have agreed to when the Malaysia Agreement was penned on July 9, 1963.

Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah said there were various factors that ought to be looked into especially when Sarawak attained independence through Malaysia more than 50 years ago.

“What they have agreed to at that time, what safeguards the state has got, whether these terms and conditions they have agreed to at that moment of time…were they followed through by the leaders of post Malaysia after the leaders that helmed this beloved nation of ours through the years?

“These are natural questions that come to us especially now with the increase in social media where people are able to access information easier and with a population with a good eduction background, there’s a lot of questions being asked,” he said in his debate to support the motion calling on the state government to be fully committed in safeguarding the special interest of the state which was tabled by Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Abdul Karim (BN Asajaya), who seconded the motion, said Sarawakians had experienced many levels of unhappiness throughout the years on issues concerning the rate of infrastructure such as the condition of schools, hospitals, clinics, roads, electricity and clean water supplies in the state, and the insufficient funding given by the federal government among others.

“There is also unhappiness of certain policies such as the usage of English, the use of the word ‘Allah’, and the right to practise one’s faith through the years as well as unhappiness over erosions of the rights of our territory especially on the ‘continental shelf’ which even before we formed Malaysia, are recognised as ours.”

“I won’t go into the very details on what are the areas that have been eroded but suffice for me to say that some of these matters have been highlighted by Our Right Honourable Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem) in his speeches across the state, in Peninsular Malaysia as well as by members of this august House,” he said.

Karim says Adenan deserves good rating in survey

July 31, 2015

SIBU: There are positive vibes towards Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem among people from all walks of life, noted Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Karim said he agreed with PKR state vice chairman See Chee How’s statement that Adenan received the 74 per cent approval rating from Sarawakians because of the timing of the survey but it could not be denied that the people were warming up to the chief minister

“I do agree with YB See that timing of survey does reflect the way public opinion goes.

But we cannot take away credit from our CM as everywhere we go, from coffee shops  to the villagers, from students to civil servants and those in the private sectors, from among Malays, Chinese and Dayak,  there is this “feeling” of liking for him.”

Karim added there are other national issues that could have influenced the survey like 1MDB, imposition of GST, fuel prices but somehow these issues did not negate the rating for Adenan.

See has also said despite enjoying a good rating, the Merdeka Centre survey results also showed that 56 per cent of those interviewed opined that corruption was a serious issue in Sarawak, while only 27 per cent thought that it was not serious.

See added that the approval rating for Adenan did not necessarily mean approval for BN Sarawak as a whole, adding that the chief minister’s high approval rating would not necessarily translated into a substantial vote swing towards the BN.

YB Fong should not utter words that tantamount to treason -Karim

April 24, 2015

KUCHING: Sixteen questions and 20 supplementary questions were answered by a minister and assistant ministers during the question-and-answer session of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.

All of them came from Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representatives except for five posed by See Chee How (PKR-Batu Lintang) and Fong Pau Teck (IND-Pujut).

The one-hour session went well without bickering while the only minister taking questions was Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who replied on behalf of the chief minister.

Fong asked the chief minister about the number of Bangladeshi and Indonesian workers in the state. After Jabu responded to his question, Fong further queried how many out of the numbers provided were illegal workers.

Maintaining his cool, Jabu said the figures he told the House were based on the records of the Immigration Department, which would not indicate the number of those entering the state illegally.

When pressed, Jabu reiterated: “We do not know the figure on the illegal workers, that is why I asked Pujut to tell us.”

Earlier, instead of posing his question the usual way by reading out the number, Abu Seman Jahwie (BN-Jemoreng) stressed the importance of being given a hearty answer.

YB See should vie for a parliamentary seat, not state seat - says Karim

KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Housing and Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How should understand that he is an assemblyman – not a Member of Parliament.

“Surely he (See) cannot compare the number of sittings between an assemblyman and a parliamentarian,” he said, adding that it was common for most parliaments to sit many times a year, even in Malaysia.

“If YB See is so hardworking and want to sit that many times a year, he should vie for a parliamentary seat, rather than a state one.”

Karim was commenting on the remark by See that Sarawak assemblymen do not assume as much responsibilities as their UK counterparts.

Meanwhile Deputy State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Roland Sagah said in order for the august House to sit for longer duration, there had to be ‘business’ to be deliberated.

“There is no point to have a sitting when there is nothing to talk about,” Sagah told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

See, who is state PKR vice chairman, pointed out in his weekly column in thesundaypost that the biggest difference between Sarawak DUN and the UK Parliament was that the former would sit for 16 days a year, while the UK one would convene the whole year round.

Karim told See to tell DAP not to be racialist and chauvinist

KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Barisan Nasional (BN) has never practised racial profiling as alleged by the opposition.

“BN has never practised racial profiling and has never neglected its responsibility towards any race although it is seen that a certain race has not supported BN, as seen in the last general election and state election,” he told thesundaypost.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing and PBB supreme council member, was commenting on Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How’s call for Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem to guard against racial profiling as practised by BN in Peninsular Malaysia.

“YB See need not have to tell or advise our chief minister on this but instead should tell its partner in Pakatan Rakyat (PR), the DAP, not to be racialist and chauvinist.

“Our new chief minister has declared that he is the chief minister for all Sarawakians and not just the Malays or Dayaks only,” Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, said.

He said it is unfair for See, who is PKR Sarawak vice chairman, to insinuate that Adenan is practising racial profiling when he has just held the post as chief minister for a couple of months.

“If YB See cares to study past and present statements of BN leaders, all are narrowed to preserving unity and harmony of the multi ethnic races in Sarawak irrespective of religion and race.”

Karim: What 'Justice for Balingian' you are talking about?

March 21, 2014

“If they expect an overnight metropolitan Balingian like KL or Kuching, then maybe PKR needs to have an ‘Alladdin Lamp’ as even BN won’t be able to do that. -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: Barisan Nasional (BN) translates people’s support into physical development for their betterment, state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said yesterday.

“The opposition, on the other hand, only makes empty promises,” he said, adding that people in constituencies represented by PKR/Pakatan Rakyat (PR) had become increasingly frustrated.

“PKR’s slogan of ‘Justice for Balingian’ was merely to attract people’s attention,” he said.

“It’s an attempt by the opposition to manipulate the issues at hand.

“But they never reveal what they can afford to do that is better than what BN has delivered thus far,” he said.

Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), was asked on PKR’s slogan of fighting for the long-term needs of Balingian folk.

State PKR vice-chairman See Chee How claimed that people of Balingian would not be swayed by the goodies dished out by BN during the by-election because what the people wanted were long-term facilities.

Karim told Chee How: ‘Go through proper channel on DUN matters’

December 8, 2013

SIBU: Matters pertaining to the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) should be discussed or brought up in DUN and not elsewhere, says Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Assistant Minister of Youth Development was reacting to state PKR vice-chairman See Chee How’s call for the Parliamentary Review Committee set up in 2010 to be activated to enhance the dynamic and functional roles of Parliament and state assemblies.

See, who is Batu Lintang assemblyman, reportedly said the committee would examine the expenditure, administration, and policy of the ministries, their government departments, associated agencies and public bodies.

This, added See, would enhance the independence of the legislative arm of the government and enable parliament and state assemblies to advance and progress.

Abdul Karim said: “I am unsure what YB See Chee How meant by activating the Parliament Review Committee. He is a member of the DUN and I hardly see him or his chairman YB Baru Bian speak in the DUN and/or raise anything about the dysfunctional role and weaknesses of the state DUN.

“I only see both of them very active giving comments outside of the DUN or to the public about the weaknesses of the government machineries as well as DUN.

Karim laugh off Chee How's good dream of ousting BN in state election

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday laughed off Pakatan Rakyat (PR)’s confidence in ousting Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next state election.

He said the statement by state Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-chairman See Chee How was like “having a good dream”.

“Well… it is always beautiful to have good dreams… he (See Chee How) can keep on dreaming,” he responded yesterday when asked for his opinion on See’s statement that PR was confident of victory in the next state election, and would go all out to oust BN.

Among others, See, who is Batu Lintang assemblyman, was quoted as saying that PR was gearing towards capturing power in the state in the next state election.

“So the next state election, we (PR) are going all out not for ourselves, but for the people in general,” he said.

Sarawak has 71 state constituencies. Abdul Karim pointed out that without sounding arrogant, the state cannot be equated with other states.

“The state BN component parties had looked after the state, and the people are generally happy despite the instigation and mudslinging by PR,” he stressed, citing the 13th general election (GE13) in May.

Sarawak BN and Oppositions say NO to overthrowing govt by force

May 15, 2013

“Pre-emptive laws should be used to stop those with evil intent on their track!” Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

KUCHING: State politicians from both sides of divide agreed that taking to the streets to overthrow the Barisan Nasional (BN) government through force is against the country’s constitution and a threat to national security.

Six-term Santubong MP Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar condemned the call by ABU (Anything But Umno) leader Haris Ibrahim and PKR vice-president Tian Chua to overthrow BN through “force”.

The former Parliamentary deputy speaker said taking to the streets to overthrow the government is tantamount to a revolution.

“The police or even the military should take action and put away the political leaders who incited the people to overthrow the BN government,” Wan Junaidi told the Borneo Post.

Citing the examples of Egypt, Libya, Syria and Tunisia, he said the people of these countries had resorted to remove the ruling regimes by force but these countries were still plagued with problems.

“They (opposition leaders) joined the fold and participated in the election process. When they lost, they claimed that they don’t have faith in the system.

“The fact is that they failed to convince the people,” said Wan Junaidi.

‘Nothing wrong to hold polling on a Sunday’ -Karim

SIBU: Politicising the polling date for the 13th general election represents another clear proof that the opposition is bent on opposing anything that the government or Election Commission (EC) does.

PBB supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he felt “very much amused” how PKR and DAP had equated polling on a Sunday (May 5) to being disrespectful and an inconvenience to Christians.

“It reflects the negative mentality of opposition leaders, who will oppose anything that the government or EC does.”

Pakatan Rakyat had blamed the EC for being insensitive to the needs of the rural folk in Sarawak and Sabah by setting polling to be on a Sunday. State DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen complained that most rural natives are Christians with church service in the morning, and many had to travel long distances to vote.

Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman, said: “I mean no disrespect to Christianity and their followers in Malaysia. I fully believe that Christian Sunday Mass and prayer services must be given due respect as much as other religious services too.

“Prayer services don’t take a whole day. One can go for Sunday Mass or religious service and after that, fulfil one’s duty as a citizen by going to vote.

“No big deal about it. If Baru (Bian), Chong or See (Chee How) thinks that it is disrespectful or inconvenient to Christians, they should remember that Muslims have to pray five times a day and they should also complain as to why we allow voting to be done during Muslim prayer hours.”
