Karim: Miri MP seems to follow law of jungle

August 3, 2014

SIBU: Miri MP Michael Teo seems to be following the ‘law of the jungle’ in mulling to remove the Miri mayor over the waterfront issue.

PBB Supreme Council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in giving this opinion, questioned if there was anything under the law where the public could file a petition to remove a mayor.

Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman, was commenting on Dr Teo’s statement that if mayor Lawrence Lai did not provide a good explanation as to why the parking lots were removed for an access road, they would resort to conduct a petition to have him removed.

“Dr Michael Teo must know how to live up to his stature as an elected parliamentarian.

“He is doing things to seek cheap publicity,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.

He recalled the other day Teo was seen manhandling some employees of a company doing some contract work.

“Well, he gets the publicity. Now, he wants to do a petition to remove the mayor.

“Is there anything under the law where the public can file a petition to remove a mayor?

“We have laws and order. Without it, the nation will be chaotic.

“But Yb Teo seems to be following the ‘law of the jungle’ that is his own law…if he has any,” Abdul Karim said.

Teo reportedly claimed that Lai had failed in his duty to look after the interest of the public when he allowed the building of the access road to link Marina Bay with Bendahara Road.

The PKR Miri chairman was further quoted to have said Lai’s job was to look after the interest of the public, and not deprive them of parking lots.

It was reported on July 2, Dr Teo had a heated argument with representatives of the developer, who insisted the project was approved by the State Planning Authority (SPA).

  1. Kenyataan Abdul Karim berhubung petisyen tidak tepat, kata See

    August 4, 2014

  2. Abd Karim challenged to see situation for himself

    August 6, 2014

MIRI: Dr Michael Teo, the Miri MP, has invited Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to come over to Miri to see for himself the real situation at Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre.

The MP even welcomed the assistant minister’s ‘law of the jungle’ statement after he reportedly said the mayor (Lawrence Lai) should be removed over the car parking lots issue.

“I am not grumbling or nagging over nonsense. But I thank Datuk Abdul Karim for showing his enthusiasm and keen interest in our problem and he must come over to see for himself the situation here,” he said.

Dr Teo had said he was mulling over the removal of the mayor for his failure to execute his duty efficiently and satisfactorily. Abdul Karim, however, described the MP’s action as ‘law of the jungle’. He also questioned if there was anything under the law where the public could file a petition to remove a mayor.

The MP claimed that the mayor had given away too many parking lots at the area to a contractor for the building of an access road at Jalan Sri Dagang to link it to Marina Bay.

He said the 100 parking lots given away for the road project were not received well by business owners and people who frequented the area.

“The people are very much discouraged from coming to the area due to the lack of parking space. Businesses are also affected,” he said.
