SWP may apply to join BN if subscribed to the struggle

SIBU: A PBB supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says any party may apply to join BN if they subscribed to BN’s struggle.

“However, before applying, one needs to see whether their act could strengthen BN or it is done for some personal agenda," said Abdul Karim in reference to a claim by Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) that it has sent an application to join the coalition.

He added: “There are already four BN parties in Sarawak and I am unsure having another one would be an appropriate action.”

Meanwhile the State BN Secretary General Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi disclosed that he had not received any application from the party.

“(Furthermore) we have not discussed the matter,” Dr Rundi, who is Public Utilities Minister, told The Borneo Post yesterday when asked if he had received the application and on the status of the application.

In a press conference here last Saturday, SWP president Munan Laja claimed that they had sent the application but were yet to receive any feedback from BN.

Nonetheless, Munan was hopeful their application would be accepted as the party’s intention was to work with the BN in developing the state.

Rumour about local PKR leaders is no surprise to state BN

SIBU: The ‘hot rumour’ about three local PKR leaders leaving the peninsular-based party to join a local party – Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) presents no surprise to the state Barisan Nasional (BN).

It is said that these PKR leaders want a stronger voice, seeing that they could not do so if they stick to the same platform.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah wasn't surprised with the rumours stressing that ‘anything is possible in politics’.

“Who would imagine an ex-Umno and BN chairman Tun (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) is now ‘hugging’ his nemesis (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim), (Lim) Kit Siang and (Lim) Guan Eng?

“It is the same with Sarawak PKR leaders. We could see them out of PKR – who knows one day, they might be sitting with us in BN,” said Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman and also a supreme council of PBB – the state BN backbone party.

Adding on, he reckoned that state PKR leaders would need to relook their struggle.

Abdul Karim also pointed out that what Sarawak and Sarawakians needed and hoped for now would be for political parties and leaders to fight for the return of state rights, which appeared to be diminishing over the years.

Karim welcomes the launching of PKR's state election logo

KUCHING: PBB Supreme Council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah welcomed the launching of PKR's election campaign logo.

He noted the launching showed that the party has shifted into high gear for the coming state election.

“This is good as the people need to be informed of what they have to offer," he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

However, on the other hand, Karim who is the Housing and Youth Assistant Minister said, he noticed that PKR would only be active when the election was around the corner.

"After that they will go into hibernation….until the next election comes.”

He added unlike PKR leaders, Barisan Nasional leaders and elected representatives were always seen on the ground attending to people's problem.

Karim was commenting on media reports that PKR has started rolling out its state election machinery.

SIBU: Only BN can ensure stability, continuity and harmony of the nation as the opposition pact is constantly at loggerheads, said Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

It would just be a matter of time before Pakatan Rakyat collapsed, he said when asked to comment on the move by PAS Dewan Ulama on Wednesday to unanimously pass an emergency motion to annul political cooperation (tahaluf siyasi) and to cut ties with the DAP.

Pahang PAS Dewan Ulama chief Mokhtar Senik, who tabled the motion, reportedly said the move was necessary as PAS’s political ally, the DAP, had officially cut ties with the PAS president.

Mokhtar also reportedly said Pakatan Rakyat was dissolved in Sarawak and Sabah due to pressure from the DAP, who not only disagreed and opposed, but lobbied PAS members to reject efforts to enhance the Kelantan Syriah Criminal Code enacted in 1993.

To this, Abdul Karim, who is also PBB Supreme Council member, said: “I see this moment coming from the day Pakatan Rakyat or PR was formed.

“PR was just a ‘marriage of convenience’ to appease the leaders of the three parties, which differ totally in their political struggles.

“It is just a matter of time this union collapses, and we can see it coming now.

SIBU: Local BN leaders are banking on hope that Sarawak will be given a bigger share of the pie in the forthcoming Budget 2014 to speed up infrastructure development in rural areas.

PRS vice president Datuk Mong Dagang for one said yesterday a bigger allocation would go a long way not only towards strengthening infrastructure facilities and connectivity in rural areas but improving and providing clean water supply as well as electricity connection to longhouses in these places.

“Of particular importance is upgrading of schools, which in many cases are in dilapidated conditions. Of course, all of us expect substantial amount to be allocated for upgrading of the Pan Borneo Trunk Road,” said Mong, who is Agriculture (Research and Marketing) Assistant Minister and Bukit Begunan assemblyman.

He was asked if the state would be given bigger allocation in the national budget given its sterling performance in the recent general election.

PBB supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawak being a big state and with much basic infrastructure still not in place yet, expressed fervent hope that the Prime Minister and Federal Government could expedite development in these areas.

He added this was more so as the rural areas of Sarawak had been instrumental in the very existence of the BN government in Malaysia and must not be overlooked.

The state, he pointed out, still lagged behind in so many quarters.
