Launching of "Sia Sitok Sarawak" campaign will boost our local tourism industry

The launching of ‘Sia Sitok Sarawak’ intra-state tourism campaign has signifies the state government’s intention of revitalising our tourism sector, which has been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The campaign will not only benefit industry players including the tour and park guides and operators, but also Sarawakians wishing to enjoy domestic tourism and it serves as a stimulus package for the local while at the same time, it provides confidence towards revitalising the industry.

I believe this package is good for Sarawakians to explore the various products as well as tourist destinations across our homeland in which the state-funded initiative would also open up more employment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sectors, in that many industry players had lost their jobs due to the prolonged Movement Control Order (MCO) period, which was enforced to flatten the curve of Covid-19 infections.

As such, we believe that with the launch of this campaign, we can gain confidence from the tourists, especially the locals, who will definitely revitalise this industry. There are over 30 intra-state packages offered including daytrips and non-overnight tours, as well as full-board multiple-day trips with accommodation and meals provided in Kuching, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Mulu.

We already kick off the campaign on July 15 and would conclude this Oct 15, initially set the travel period for the packages to run until Nov 30 this year but the travel period would be extended to December to give Sarawakians more opportunities to enjoy the packages offered under the campaign.

Among the packages covered are the Sarawak River Sunset Cruise, Irrawaddy Dolphin Cruise at Santubong, bird-watching at Kubah National Park, ‘Fun Dive’ day-trip at Satang Island, Evening Kuching Wetlands Tour, Bako National Park Tour, the full-board Tanjong Datu National Park Tour, and the golfing package at Eastwood Golf Club in Miri.

Adding on to that, the ‘Sia Sitok Sarawak’ campaign had been ‘delicately planned’ by Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) to include various packages with substantial discount offers of up to 50 per cent – all meant to help revive and boost local travels.

For a start, the campaign will first be open to Sarawak Covid-19 ‘frontline warriors and relief workers’ – namely the healthcare and medical personnel, Royal Malaysia Police, People’s Volunteers Corps (Rela), the Armed Forces, the Civil Defence Force, and Fire and Rescue Department. They are our heroes who truly deserve this priority treatment in appreciation for their hard work, and for putting their lives on the line to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

These packages would later be extended to all Sarawakians and non-Sarawakians residing in Sarawak (those with work permits) so that they too could experience ‘the beauty of Sarawak’ and take advantage of the many attractive tour products at affordable prices. Additionally, Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) would initiate the ‘Interstate Package Sarawak’ by mid-September.

This is a wonderful public-private partnership initiative, where this is a package for us to encourage domestic travel involving those from Peninsular Malaysia. The ‘Interstate Package Sarawak’ will kick off in mid-September, with travelling period from October to December this year. This catalytic programme will activate our ‘Visitors Incentive Package’ (VIP) – created to provide Sarawak travel agencies with various support to facilitate tourist arrivals, both domestic and international.

‘MTB still responsible for promoting Sarawak’

June 15, 2017

KUCHING: Malaysia Tourism Board (MTB) still has the responsibility to promote Sarawak even after the state government has decided to withdraw the participation of its representative in the MTB, said Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“The way I see it, Tourism Malaysia (MTB) has got the responsibility to promote all the states. Just because we have taken out our representative from Tourism Malaysia, doesn’t mean they don’t need to promote Sarawak anymore.

“We are still a part of Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia has got to look after it (promoting Sarawak). It is just that we have Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) which is doing the exact same role like what Tourism Malaysia is doing.

“So that is why we do not want this duplication. Might as well we just focus on our own STB to do all this promotion,” he said after receiving a mock cheque from Zurich Insurance Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Philip Smith during a ceremony here yesterday.

In a statement announcing the state government’s decision to withdraw the participation of its representative in MTB, the Chief Minister’s Office had said the state government deemed that the participation of its representative in MTB is unnecessary as it duplicates the roles and functions of STB.

June 13, 2017

KUCHING: State Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the decision of the Chief Minister Office to pull out from Malaysia Tourism Board (MTB) is not due to the spat between him and Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz.

He said the decision was made by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and he has his reasons for doing so.

“No, it is not related to what happened between Datuk Nazri and me,” he told The Borneo Post when asked whether the pullout was due to the recent exchange of words between him and Nazri.

STB to digitise all promo materials — Minister

SARAWAK Tourism Board (STB) will digitalise all promotional materials to increase its presence in ‘call for action’ booking portals to leapfrog its performance.

This is in line with the state government’s call for the use of digitalisation, said Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“STB will still provide a face-to-face interaction marketing as human interaction in tourism business is inevitable and remains relevant although digital marketing is widely used,” he said in his winding-up speech yesterday.

He said his ministry had set up a consultative platform known as Sarawak Tourism Forum to engage and get feedback from tourism players.

Some requests from industry players made through the forum had been implemented while a few others were still at discussion level, he added.

CycleFest Sarawak 2013 starts this weekend

March 28, 2013

KUCHING: Over 200 participants are expected to take part in the CycleFest Sarawak 2013 which will be held from this Friday to Sunday at Padang Merdeka.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development, Abdul Karim Hamzah said the annual event, which was held for the second year, aimed to promote cycling and tourism in the state and had attracted cyclists from neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia.

“The second edition sees the introduction of multi-stage category racing for the first time to cater cyclists from different fitness levels. Participants have the opportunity to experience the tour-like racing in two stages.

The Stage 1 Team Trial (30 March) covers a 15-km fast course in Petra Jaya, starting from the New DUN building and ends at Padang Merdeka,” he disclosed during a press conference held at Baitulmakmur building here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Stage 2 Century Road Race (31March) presents a challenging 165km route that starts and ends in Padang Merdeka. The participants will be cycling through three districts (Kuching, Samarahan and Serian), which features contrasts of bustling towns and rustic villages, beautiful lush green surroundings and some technical lumpy sections.

Thus, Karim urged members of the public, especially the road users to be considerate and cooperative during the weekends to ensure the event goes smoothly.

He added CycleFest Sarawak 2013 offers over RM16,000 cash prizes and trophies for all categories.
