“The Samarahan Regatta to be held at Kampung Tambirat, which was last held in 2015, is back again to prepare competitors for the coming Sarawak Regatta,” he told reporters here yesterday at a news conference to announce the event.

Mohd Ali moved to Stakan, Karim to defend Asajaya

KOTA SAMARAHAN: As speculated, Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mahmud will be fielded in the new constituency of Stakan in the coming state election.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who announced this during the launching of PBB Samarahan election machinery in Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan yesterday, however, did not reveal the candidate for Muara Tuang. With Mohd Ali, who has been Muara Tuang assemblyman for two terms, moving to Stakan, this means Muara Tuang will have a new face from PBB.

Adenan also announced that Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will defend Asajaya, the seat he has represented since 2001. Asajaya, Muara Tuang and Stakan are under the Samarahan constituency.

Adenan entertains the crowd by singing a song before the function starts
“For Muara Tuang, leave it to me to decide. Do you agree with me?” he asked the crowd, which was immediately met with voices of their approval. Talks are rife that PBB supreme council member and former senator Datuk Idris Buang
PBB Muara Tuang Deputy Chairman cum State
PBB Youth Treasurer Hamzah Ibrahim leads
the pledge of loyalty to the party.
would be fielded in Muara Tuang. Muara Tuang is no strange land to Adenan who was its assemblyman from 1978 to 2006.

On another matter, Adenan reiterated that PBB would contest in 40 seats in the coming polls.

He added that if PBB won all 40 seats, the party could get a simple majority to form the government with several seats from other BN components, but he said that was not what the party was aiming for. “We don’t want a simple win. We want the win to be as big as possible.”

He also mentioned that the 11 new seats were being distributed based on 5-2-2-2 formula with the other three BN components.

Keselamatan Karnival Belia dijamin

Sarawak ready to shatter world retro walk record

KUCHING: Sarawak is confident of smashing the Guinness World Record for the largest number of retro walk participants, which is currently held by Germany with 1,507 participants.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban Areas) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the response to the retro walk to be held in conjunction with the Youth Carnival 2014 has been overwhelming.

“Thus far, we have over 2,000 on record for the retro walk on Oct 11 and we hope to see the record being broken by Malaysia, particularly by Sarawakians,” he told a news conference yesterday.

The Guinness World Record was previously held by China with 1,039 participants.

On Oct 11, more than 2,000 youths and individuals of all ages are expected to gather at Grand Margherita Hotel at 7.30am for the 1km retro walk.

Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip is scheduled to launch the event.

Karim said the retro walk would be one of the major events for the week-long carnival themed ‘You Are The 1’ to take place at Padang Merdeka from Monday to the following Sunday (Oct 6-12).

Tunship fitting and timely for Taib — PBB leaders

KUCHING: The conferment of Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN), which carries the title ‘Tun’, on Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is both fitting and timely, considering his unsurpassed contribution to the nation’s development.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the former chief minister deserves to be bestowed the nation’s highest accolade due to his vast contribution to the country’s progress, in particular Sarawak, for over 50 years.

Taib who is also former PBB president received the award from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara yesterday.

“This award fits the contribution and sacrifices Pehin Sri (Taib) has rendered to Malaysia and Sarawak since the 60s.

“As a citizen of Malaysia living in Sarawak, we are very happy with this award which Pehin Sri deservingly received.

“His contribution to Malaysia is unsurpassed.

“He has served all five prime ministers in various ministerial capacities either at state or federal,” commented the Assistant Minister for Youth Development.

Karim: What 'Justice for Balingian' you are talking about?

March 21, 2014

“If they expect an overnight metropolitan Balingian like KL or Kuching, then maybe PKR needs to have an ‘Alladdin Lamp’ as even BN won’t be able to do that. -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: Barisan Nasional (BN) translates people’s support into physical development for their betterment, state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said yesterday.

“The opposition, on the other hand, only makes empty promises,” he said, adding that people in constituencies represented by PKR/Pakatan Rakyat (PR) had become increasingly frustrated.

“PKR’s slogan of ‘Justice for Balingian’ was merely to attract people’s attention,” he said.

“It’s an attempt by the opposition to manipulate the issues at hand.

“But they never reveal what they can afford to do that is better than what BN has delivered thus far,” he said.

Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), was asked on PKR’s slogan of fighting for the long-term needs of Balingian folk.

State PKR vice-chairman See Chee How claimed that people of Balingian would not be swayed by the goodies dished out by BN during the by-election because what the people wanted were long-term facilities.

Karim: It is good that PKR has beautiful dreams of winning Balingian

“But when you wake up and face reality, only then you realise it’s just a dream, and the good feeling is just temporary.” -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: PKR will face the full might of the BN in the Balingian by-election, said state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi.

Promising an all-out fight to keep their stronghold, he added they would fight the opposition as a ‘BN team’.

“We have anticipated their style of campaigning and shall not be overwhelmed by their aggressiveness,” said Dr Rundi, who is also Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications).

He was reacting to PKR Lanang branch chief George Chen’s statement claiming of brighter chance of wresting the seat from BN.

Chen had on Saturday revised their chances of winning Balingian from 30/70 to 50/50 due to “positive vibes on the ground”.

Dr Rundi said PKR were entitled to their opinion and BN would not be affected by it.

“Whatever it is, we will not be morally affected as we know our strength and, to some extent, theirs as well. We will go and fight them to our utmost strength as a BN team.”

Karim: It doesn't matter whether bigger or reduced majority in Balingian

KUCHING: A supreme council member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is confident that Barisan Nasional (BN) will win the Balingian by-election.

However, he pointed out that whether it would win with a bigger or reduced majority did not matter.

“BN will win the seat…and on whether the majority will increase or decrease is not too important, what is important is that the election process is done smoothly and BN wins the seat,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Youth Development Minister, said in his text message.

Abdul Karim did not dwell further on the candidate, except to say that the candidate is a Melanau Christian and his name will be announced by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tomorrow.

At least five names – Adrian Langi Dorhat Alphonsus, Yussibnosh Balo, Akit Sebli, Dr Anthony Valentine Laiseh and Paul Druce – have been bandied about as the potential candidate.

The seat fell vacant following the resignation of incumbent Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on Feb 28 to take up his appointment as the state’s seventh Yang di-Pertua Negeri on March 1.

Opposition will be rejected in Balingian — Abdul Karim

SIBU: Voters in Balingian state constituency will reject the opposition’s brand of politics founded on malicious campaigning and lies.

This is because voters there are mature and know which party has been helping them, said PBB supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday.

He was reacting to state PKR chairman Baru Bian’s statement that PKR would field a local candidate and use the price hike as their weapon against BN.

Tagging themselves as ‘underdog’, Baru claimed they were capable of winning the hearts of the people there despite it being a BN stronghold.

To this, Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman, said: “What else is new to PR or PKR?

“I thought they have been using price hike as one of their main campaigning issues in the past election and this one is nothing new.”

He reckoned that PKR must have been looking for issues as propaganda the last few days and could only come up with the “price hike” again to hoodwink the people.

Karim: Balingian is as good as ours already

KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) which indicated that it will contest in the Balingian by-election, will hardly be a match for juggernaut BarisanNasional (BN).

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the seat “is already as good as ours (BN)”.

“Whoever is going to contest against BN is the least of our concerns.

“We are not being arrogant, but the seat is as good as ours already,” the Assistant Minister of Youth Development pointed out in his text message.

The Balingian seat fell vacant after Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud relinquished the chief minister’s post on Feb 28 and was appointed the seventh Head of State.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing, said Pakatan Rakyat (PR) of PKR was just “wasting their time” contesting as the constituency is a stronghold of PBB and BN.

State BN secretary-general DatukDr Stephen Rundi Utom has also said BN was ready for the opposition and stands united against its fledgling foe.

Karim advices Baru: Don't waste public fund just because want to try luck to be Chief Minister

February 21, 2014

“My advice to him – we are not like PKR who love to see election after election being held." -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian’s prediction of an early state polls does not carry weight.

In saying this, state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi added it was up to the present government to decide when and ground sentiments are of prime importance.

“The government is working very hard to fulfil its promises as stipulated in the manifesto before facing the people,” added Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications).

He was responding to Baru’s prediction that the 11th state election might be called between this September and next September.

Baru had said his prediction stemmed from the fact that new leaders wanted a fresh mandate from the people as soon as possible.

The state assembly’s term will expire on June 20, 2016 but the chief minister has the prerogative to dissolve it earlier.

Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem is scheduled to succeed Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud as chief minister this Feb 28.
