Water supply problem in Asajaya will be a history soon

KOTA SAMARAHAN : The people in Asajaya will be able to have better water supply once the water supply problem in the area is solved in six months to one year from now.

Asajaya assemblyman Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that the government was taking serious effort to solve this water supply problem as could be seen by the many huge pipelines placed along the roadside in Asajaya waiting to be connected to the sources from Kuching.

He added that the water plant in Asajaya itself was unable to supply enough water to all the people in Asajaya and Sadong Jaya due to the increase in population.

Karim said this when met by the media after closing the Shell Traffic Education Programme for Samarahan District 2013 held at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan last Monday.

According to Karim , the pipeline conneting work would be slightly delayed due to some problems faced by the contractor.

On the Shell Traffic Education Programme , Karim said it was a good initiative by Shell as it would create greater awareness on road safety among the programme participants so that they would become responsible road users.

“It is good to start this porgramme with school kids because they can practise what have learn and apply it for their whole live,” said Karim.300 school students from 17 schools in Samarhan division participated in the programme.

   

Special children take part in Shell Traffic Games

GOOD START: Children of SJK Chung Hua Asajaya which emerged overall team winner (primary school
category) with the guests.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Some 272 school children from 17 secondary and primary schools (six secondary and 11 primary schools) in Samarahan division participated in the Shell Traffic Games at the Civic Centre here.

Yesterday’s event was participated by hearing-impaired children from Samarahan Special School.

According to Shell Malaysia Upstream Corporate Affairs senior manager Peing Tajang, this was the first time the event was participated by these special children.

She encouraged the participation of more such children in the future.

Assistant Youth Development Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah officiated at the closing ceremony.

Peing said road safety was a key focus area in the company’s corporate social responsibility.

“We spend over RM1 million every year to implement the games (Shell Traffic Games) across the country, and for Sarawak we allocate over RM300,000 annually.”

Karim: Water woes to end within 6 to 12 months

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The shortage of clean water here is expected to be over within six months and one year from now.

Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this is because the laying of water pipes to the water source in Kuching is still underway.

He explained yesterday that the work was a bit slow due to the problems faced by the contractor.

“With the present water shortage, I hope the affected people will be patient because the problem can be rectified within a year,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Youth Development Minister, told reporters after closing the Shell Traffic Games at the Civic Centre here.

The Assistant Minister of Housing explained that the present water treatment plant in Asajaya could not meet the demand of the growing population.

“If we look at the present phase of development and growing household and population, the water treatment plant cannot meet the demand and that is why we are facing the water problem,” he pointed out.

Check lights before riding motorcycles - Karim

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Many are driving motorcycles with non-functioning tail-lights.

This caught the attention of Youth Development Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The situation, he said, was made worst when the motorcyclist and pillion rider were not wearing reflective gear.

He urged the owners to check their motorcycle lights so as not to court danger.

“While driving at night, I used to notice that there are motorcycles with headlamps on, but not the tail-lights. I urge the owners of motorcycles to rectify the problem as it will not cost much,” Abdul Karim said at the closing of Samarahan level Shell Traffic Games at the Civic centre here yesterday.

He said some motorcyclists risk their lives and that of others by riding machines they know are not roadworthy, and could cause road accidents.

Abdul Karim commended Sarawak Shell Bhd for organising the event for the 50th year.
