KOTA SAMARAHAN: Many are driving motorcycles with non-functioning tail-lights.
This caught the attention of Youth Development Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The situation, he said, was made worst when the motorcyclist and pillion rider were not wearing reflective gear.
He urged the owners to check their motorcycle lights so as not to court danger.
“While driving at night, I used to notice that there are motorcycles with headlamps on, but not the tail-lights. I urge the owners of motorcycles to rectify the problem as it will not cost much,” Abdul Karim said at the closing of Samarahan level Shell Traffic Games at the Civic centre here yesterday.
He said some motorcyclists risk their lives and that of others by riding machines they know are not roadworthy, and could cause road accidents.
Abdul Karim commended Sarawak Shell Bhd for organising the event for the 50th year.
“It is a laudable initiative for Shell (Sarawak Shell Berhad) to instill road safety awareness among school children, but I hope it includes youths and older people. There is no better way to instill road safety than to start young,” he said. He called on other corporate bodies to emulate Shell’s initiative in instilling road safety awareness among the people.
Present at the closing were Samarahan District Council Walikota Datuk Federick Bayoi Manggie and Upstream Corporate Affairs senior manager Peing Tajang.
