KUCHING: Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg retained his post as president of Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) which also saw the election of a new deputy-president and three new vice-presidents.

State Legislative Assembly (DUN) deputy speaker Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn who was formerly a vice-president took up the role as deputy-president to replace Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas.

The Betong MP decided not to seek re-election due to his commitment in Putrajaya as Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities. Abang Johari mentioned that Uggah will continue to help with the development of Saberkas as the latter has planned to set up a palm oil seedling project which will involve the association.

The three newly elected vice-presidents are Youth Development Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi and Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali who is the first woman elected as a vice-president of Saberkas.

The trio replaced former International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office Datuk Naroden Majais, Jason Tai Hee and Sagah. Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin was re-elected as vice-president.

Saberkas secretary-general Datuk Aidan Wing and deputy secretary-general Dato Paul Teo Choo Tee also retained their respective posts. The new committee, to serve for the 2013-2016 term, also saw the election of 25 new ordinary exco-members which included Engkilili assemblyman Johnical Rayong Ngipa.

“I hope that Saberkas would be able to continue playing its role to help the government and youths in the state mainstream development up to the year 2030.

“The election of the office-bearers, following changes to the constitution to allow more youths to take up posts, would ensure that strong and experienced leadership will be continuous in the association line-up,” Abang Johari told a press conference after chairing the association triennial general assembly (TGM) meeting at the Riverside Majestic Hotel here yesterday.

Newly elected vice-presidents Abdul Karim and Dr Rundi will take care of youth development matters in the urban and rural areas respectively.

“The appointment of Karim and Dr Rundi will help Saberkas to strengthen youth development in various sectors at the urban and youth level. Hasidah will be given the trust to engage with women youths. She is still young, she would be able to bring the message of Saberkas to the female society.

“Lee will be representing the young Chinese community. Being an assistant minister in charge of sports, all these presented a nice combination (to shape an efficient team) for Saberkas,” he continued.

Abang Johari was content to note that Saberkas new exco-committee ordinary members, consisting of various professionals including a Kayan and Bidayuh lawyer, represents a young and dynamic team of professionals who wants to provide their service to Saberkas.

On his take of the TGM, Abang Johari was satisfied and content with the participation of the delegates. He said most of the delegates in attendance at the conference were those below 45 years of age, a first in the association’s history.

“During the meeting, we noticed vast positive changes and improvements in terms of the presentation of ideas. Arguments by delegates were very constructive, where many new ideas and inputs had been suggested to strengthen Saberkas at both state and branch levels,” he pointed out.
