February 25, 2019

Abdul Karim joins Rubiah (front, left), Aidil (fourth right), Lee (front, second left) and other guests in a photo-call during the event at IPD Kota Samarahan.
KOTA SAMARAHAN: This parliamentary constituency has undergone major changes over the last 20 to 30 years, making it among those experiencing rapid development.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah observes that the area is now a municipality with its own council, a number of high-rise buildings and shopping malls, and is also regarded as Sarawak’s educational hub in that it houses many local and international colleges and universities.

However, he also points out that with modernisation, there are also social problems affecting the local community.

Karim hopes ‘militant ideology report’ not true

KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he hoped that the news report on attempts to bring militant ideology to Sarawak was not true.

“I hope this news is not true. We seem to be getting alarming news like this but difficult to substantiate as no arrest has been known to be made.

“I hope the police that come up with the news could give public information as ‘half news’ can lead to a lot of speculations,” he said yesterday when asked to comment on news report yesterday quoting Supt Ahmad Norisham Ma’arus of the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (Investigation and Legal) that the police had detected attempts to bring militant ideology influenced by Daesh terrorists’ activities to Sarawak.

Supt Ahmad Norisham Ma’arus was reported to have disclosed to reporters after a briefing on ‘Awareness of extremism and IS threat’ in Miri on Tuesday that monitoring and investigation was still ongoing by Sarawak police, and so far the identity or nationality of those trying to bring in such militant ideology to Sarawak could not be made public.

“If we expose all, those involved will be alerted of being monitored and this involves not only one party but a big network,” he was quoted as saying.

Karim, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing said a few days ago he read about an arrest being made of a suspect bomber in Ampang who was about to go on a ‘bombing’ mission.

Bring back public confidence, Abdul Karim tells police

December 2, 2015

KUCHING: The police have to do their part in bringing back public confidence that the country is governed by the rule of law, in view of the two assault cases that happened in the state recently.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah gave this view when commenting on the assault case involving Tuai Rumah Jambai from Bekelit in Bekenu and public assault of two youths at a mall here on Sunday.

“I congratulate the swift action taken by the police in apprehending the suspects in the assault case in Miri and the one at a shopping complex in Kuching. I have to admit that the public are alarmed by what is happening and thanks to social media for bringing this matter to the open.

“The police have to do their part in bringing back public confidence that the country is governed by the rule of law and not law of the jungle. We cannot let thugs and hooligans rule the street and create an atmosphere of fear to the public,” Abdul Karim told The Borneo Post yesterday.

On the assault case in a shopping mall, Abdul Karim said state Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman should not brush aside the incident as an isolated case and not a case involving criminal gangs.

“He should instead make sure that the long arm of the law will reach out to all offenders wherever they are. Do not let the public lose hope on law enforcement agencies.”

Sabtu had told reporters yesterday that the public assault here on Sunday was an ‘isolated case’ which was not in any way linked to gangsterism.

Curtail gambling habit, urges Karim

November 1, 2015

SIBU: Any games of chance that can lure people into picking up gambling habits should be curtailed, says Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, stressed that prompt action needs to be taken to prevent especially the youths from getting ‘hooked’ on the bad habit.

He said this yesterday when asked on concerns by members of public on certain centres hosting the ‘Fishing Game’ which was said to be a form of gambling reported in the media recently.

“Yes…it is not just the public who are concerned but the government and political leaders from both BN and the opposition are concerned with the ‘sprouting’ of cyber gambling centres offering various types of wager… whether it’s “Fishing games”, “Monkey games” or even “one arm bandit”.

“Any game of chance or any form of gambling which could entice youths or public picking up gambling habits should be curtailed.

“We have seen many of these centres mushrooming and we do admit the authorities are doing many raids to check on this.

“We hope the police and councils can beef up their efforts to eradicate these gambling premises instead of sweeping it under the carpet and/or telling off Wakil Rakyat who raised this matter up as if they have “lost touch with the ground”,” Abdul Karim told the sundaypost.

Ubat batuk 'dadah murah'

KETAGIH ...

Regulate sale of ‘poor man’s drugs’ to prevent abuse

February 25, 2015

Karim receives his official letter as Pemadam state chair from his predecessor Datuk Sharifah Mordiah Tuanku Fauzi. Lukas is at left while AADK state director Wan Madihi Wan Salleh is at third left.

KUCHING: The sale of ‘poor man’s drugs’ need to be regulated to prevent their abuse.

Newly-elected Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) state chair Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this is because such substances are cheaper and easier to access than designer drugs.

“The government is actually looking at ways to control substance abuse. Other common forms of substance abuse are glue sniffing, which is quite rampant in Sarawak,” the Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban Areas) told reporters yesterday.

“I am not pointing fingers, but drug stores or pharmacies should not sell these substances (such as Nospan and cough medicine) to anyone without a doctor’s diagnosis letter or sell it in a very large quantity.”

Nospan (dextromethorphan HBr) and cough medicines, which contain codeine or promethazine, are widely sold at pharmacies, but can cause hallucinations if abused through excessive use.

Through the abuse of these substances, users are more likely to progress to an advanced stage of drug experimentation and addiction on designer drugs such as ecstasy, syabu, methamphetamine and Erimin-5.

Karim pointed out that the enactment of such regulations comes under the federal government.

Insiden rusuhan amat mendukacitakan: Karim

September 1, 2014

Case of school boys nabbed with drugs saddens Abdul Karim

August 25, 2014

KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Youth Development, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is dismayed with the incident where eight school boys in Sibu were caught with ‘ganja’ in a school bag.

He said the incident showed drug usage in the state had crept into schools.

“I’m sad to hear the latest case of the eight school boys caught with drugs which reflects the state of drug usage in the state and it may not be an isolated case,” Abdul Karim said in a texted message recently.

He hoped this was not just the tip of the iceberg.

He was commenting on a case at a secondary school in Sibu, where six Form 3 students and two Form 4 students were found inside a toilet – one of them with ganja in a school bag.

The report said the case was confirmed by Sibu deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo.

Abdul Karim hoped Education Department, police, Anti-Drug Agency and related agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the community would continue the fight against drugs.

Rep surprised cops (@PDRMsia) unaware of drug peddling on cybernet

November 15, 2013

SIBU: The police need to stay steps ahead of criminals who are employing sophisticated tools to commit crime, says Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He was reacting to news report that drug addicts could now get their supply (of drugs) by paying for them online and have the drugs delivered to them.

According to the report, the police believed they had uncovered this online supply line after the arrest of three teenage brothers last week for being hooked to ‘ice’, the street name for methamphetamine.

“Well, in this sophisticated world, I am not surprised that the ‘cybernet’ apart from being a tool for communication and gathering information, could be used for illegal transactions.

“In fact, we have heard of other vices like cyber gambling and prostitution being peddled through the cyberspace. So, drug peddling through the ‘cybernet’ is not something impossible.

“I am somewhat surprised that the police are shocked by this new revelation. They should not if they had kept themselves abreast with the development of Internet.

“The police, being the custodian of peace and security, must not rest on their laurel, but must be steps ahead of those who are criminal-minded,” Abdul Karim said.
