KOTA SAMARAHAN: This parliamentary constituency has undergone major changes over the last 20 to 30 years, making it among those experiencing rapid development.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah observes that the area is now a municipality with its own council, a number of high-rise buildings and shopping malls, and is also regarded as Sarawak’s educational hub in that it houses many local and international colleges and universities.
However, he also points out that with modernisation, there are also social problems affecting the local community.
“When you have development like this plus the accessibility, you are comfortable.
“Maybe 20 to 30 years ago, you would not hear about many social problems such as thefts, robberies and drug abuse, but because of modernisation, it also brings along that sense of insecurity because of all the problems that are happening nowadays,” he spoke during a Chinese New Year gathering, hosted by the Kota Samarahan District police headquarters (IPD) at the civic centre here recently.
Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang and Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidil Lariwoo were among the distinguished guests.
Adding on, Abdul Karim who is Asajaya assemblyman, commended the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for always upholding the law and keeping public order.
“Without them, we wouldn’t have comfortable lives as they are the ones working around the clock to look after our safety and ensure that crime cases would be reduced.
“We hope that the PDRM would continue to undertake this responsibility, and also to unite the people. I understand that IPD Kota Samarahan holds this event annually, where you see many people from different races are here tonight,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kota Samarahan District police chief DSP Lee Chong Chern said the IPD had just conducted their ‘Ops Selamat 14’ slated for the Chinese New Year festive season, where they recorded lower number of road accidents this year – at 14 cases including one fatal accident
“Last year, we recorded 18 (accident) cases. For residents going back to their hometowns, we received eight notifications. We have not received any housebreaking or theft case,” he said. -TheBorneoPost
