KUCHING: The Sarawak government is in the midst of a discussion to bring back the over 100 human skeletons, which were excavated from Niah Caves, from the United States.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the skeletons, which were kept at a university in Nevada were brought to the USA for study by scientists.
He said the study had been completed and the authority in Nevada had agreed that the skeletons be returned to Sarawak.

“Now that we want Niah Caves to become a historical site, these human skeletons have to come back.
“Our correspondences are moving and the other side (US) have agreed to give the skeletons back – probably by end of this year,” Abdul Karim told reporters yesterday after launching the ‘Night in the Museum’ programme at the compound of the Sarawak Museum, here.
He also said the Sarawak government was applying for a certification from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) for Niah Caves to be listed as a historical site.
He said it would normally take less than five years for it (Niah Caves) to be certified by Unesco.
“For it to be certified, several procedures have to be followed. We want to see everything in place like in the caves, in particularly the facilities,” he said, adding that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had given a commitment to upgrade the facilities, such as walkways. -TheBorneoPost
