KUCHING: The provision of airfare subsidy to Sarawakian students going back home during festive seasons is a commendable effort by the Sarawak government, says Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The subsidy, according to him, would enable more Sarawakian students who are studying in Peninsular Malaysia, to spend more time with their families during the festive holidays.

However, he could not comment about this programme further without having the full details on such policy.

“This thing (airfare subsidy for Sarawakian students) was only announced last night (Friday) – I myself have yet to see the details. So it’s very difficult for me to comment now,” he told reporters after the launch of ‘AirAsia Sarawak Campaign Livery’ yesterday.

Abdul Karim regarded the subsidy as ‘a good policy’, which was taken by the Sarawak government and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg after the ‘Lan Berambeh’ programme last year.

“I’m not sure yet on the mechanism (with regard) to obtaining the subsidy – if I’m not mistaken, it is RM300. Probably, they have to show their student’s pass when claiming for the subsidy,” he said.

According to Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman who is also Sarawak Volunteers advisor, Sarawakian students only get to enjoy this subsidy two times a year, with the provision to commence this Chinese New year.

For the students to enjoy this subsidy, all they need to do is produce their air tickets and/or boarding passes and also student’s verification documents.

Detailed information on how to apply for the subsidy, as well as the terms and conditions, can now be accessed via Sarawak Volunteers Facebook page. -TheBorneoPost
