Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu vice-president Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah denies report that several elected representatives of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition plan to quit.
KUALA LUMPUR: A Sarawak state leader today brushed off talk that nine elected representatives would be leaving the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.
Berita Harian reported that the nine had lost confidence in GPS’ top leadership, particularly Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), which is the largest party in GPS.
But PBB vice-president Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, in responding to the claims, said he was confident that no one from his party was jumping ship.
“Our party is a very cultured party. I cannot speak for other parties, but from the main party, that is PBB, I am confident there will be no jumping.
“I also strongly believe the representatives from other component parties will not jump ship,” he told FMT here today.
On Saturday, Berita Harian reported that six MPs from GPS would be quitting PBB to join a new party known as Parti Pribumi Sarawak. PBB is part of the ruling GPS coalition in Sarawak.
The daily quoted a source as saying three GPS assemblymen had also expressed their intention of leaving the coalition after the six MPs made known their intention to do so.
It was learnt that out of the nine, seven are from PBB while the remaining two are from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).
When asked about elected representatives leaving, purportedly due to the weak leadership of Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg who is also PBB president, Karim said he did not see the former as weak.
“I have been with him. He is a clean man. I do not see him as weak. Those who want to criticise and demonise will do just that.
“But I can tell you, there is no jumping from my party,” he added. -FreeMalaysiaToday
