KUCHING: A bevy of beauties has descended on the city as Kuching plays host to the prestigious Miss World Malaysia 2018 for the first time.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in a press conference yesterday said the city is honoured to stage such a grand event, which will see 12 finalists vie for the title.

“The star-studded event on Sept 8 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) will be graced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Special guests for the gala night will include Malaysian supermodel and actress Amber Chia, Malaysian model and actress Carmen Soo, famed actress Tong Bing Yu, Miss World Malaysia 2014 Dewi Liana Seriestha, Miss World Malaysia 2015 Brynn Lovett, Miss Cheongsam Sarawak 2016 Sapphire Wong, and award-winning singer-songwriter Imran Ajmain as well as singer and actress Wei Wei,” he said.

Of the 70 initial contestants who went through the first elimination process in Kuala Lumpur, 18 were selected for the second elimination stage to be held here today, of whom 12 will proceed to the final.

Of the 18 semi-finalists, four are from Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Sean Wong from Fantastic Golden, the franchisee of Miss World Malaysia said this year’s contestants comprise not only models, but also medical doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, accountants and chefs.

“This was something unexpected and when we asked them why they wanted to take part in this prestigious event, they said it is because beauty comes with a purpose.

“They want to do good in society.

“They don’t see this as (just) a beauty pageant, but a platform for them to reach out to those in need and to do something great.

“This is something that we want to bring out through this beautiful and meaningful event,” he said.

The winner of Miss World Malaysia 2018 will represent the nation at the 68th Miss World Finals to be held in Sanya, China on Dec 8.

The annual Miss World Finals is aired live to approximately 180 countries and attracts more than 1 billion viewers, and consistently ranks among the most watched live annual entertainment telecasts in the world.

Among those present at the press conference were Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan; Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee.
