Sports good ‘unity tool’ for nation — Abdul Karim

SIBU: Sport is seen as a good activity to reunite the people who were deeply caught up in politics in the recent general election.

PBB supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah beleived this was because sport went beyond party, racial and religious lines.

“Yes, I am all for this. It is good to promote sports as a ‘unity tool’ to unite the nation that had undergone a general election.

“The election had somewhat created some division and uneasiness among some sectors of the society and now is time for reconciliation.

“Among others, sports is one of the good tools for reconciliation,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman, said yesterday.

He was asked to comment on Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s statement that sport must continue to serve as a unity agent in Malaysia besides helping to strengthen the 1Malaysia spirit.

Muhyiddin, who was reported to have said this at the presentation of Malaysia University Sports Council (Masum) Awards 2012 last Saturday in Shah Alam, added this was vital for the country to continue enjoy peace and prosperity.

Sport association leader Dr Gregory Hii threw his weight behind Muhyiddin’s statement, saying it epitomised the 1Malaysia spirit.

“I have long realised it as you can see all Malaysians irrespective of race and religion cheering the home team when we play against other national teams.

“How I wish more Malaysians are involved in sports and cultivate the spirit of unity,” Dr Hii said.

To that end, he hoped politicians would be more careful with thoughtless comments.
