Gov’t focusing on innovation and creativity

KUCHING: Innovation and creativity are the main focus of the government’s efforts towards a developed country and a high income nation by the year 2020.

Therefore, it is important for everyone to cultivate innovation in their daily life.

Assistant Minister of Housing and Youth Development, Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated this during the closing ceremony of UiTM Innovation and Creativity Week at UiTM, Kota Samarahan here yesterday.

“We need to think outside the box to deliver quality services and produce products that are able to compete internationally and, at the same time, bring up the country’s name,” said Karim.

He pointed out that younger generations were capable of competing and had plenty of ideas to create innovative and creative things.

According to him, noble efforts like these can continue to provide opportunities for the youths to bring their ideas to a higher level, where they can make significant changes in services and in everyday life.

“Constructive collaboration between higher education institutions, communities and the government is very important to achieve the vision of producing young generations who are competitive and creative to trigger an innovation that can enhance the dignity and the name of the country in the eyes of the world.”

Karim said that Innovation and Creative Programmes like this must be carried out often to meet the aims and objectives of nurturing a culture of innovation and creativity in the young generations and the society.

“Through this programme, I hope that in the future, there will be more innovative and creative products and students must continue to build their efforts to always stay innovative and creative.”

Meanwhile, UiTM Sarawak Rector, Professor Dato Dr.Jamil Haji Hamali said innovation was not only a key to successful organisation but also served to spur the progress of a country and strengthen its position globally.

“Innovation should be able to bring transformation. Innovation is not intended just for taking part in competitions or simply get recognised but the focus should be to encourage continuous innovation.”

UiTM Innovation and Creativity Week with the theme “Innovation: Towards High Income Nation” was a one-week programme which encouraged the students to think innovatively and creatively in producing products.

The programme was held in conjunction with UiTM’s 40th anniversary.

It was organised by UiTM in collaboration with FAMA Sarawak and Sarawak Intellectual Property Office and Invention and Design Association of Sarawak (IDEAS).
