“Pre-emptive laws should be used to stop those with evil intent on their track!” Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

KUCHING: State politicians from both sides of divide agreed that taking to the streets to overthrow the Barisan Nasional (BN) government through force is against the country’s constitution and a threat to national security.

Six-term Santubong MP Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar condemned the call by ABU (Anything But Umno) leader Haris Ibrahim and PKR vice-president Tian Chua to overthrow BN through “force”.

The former Parliamentary deputy speaker said taking to the streets to overthrow the government is tantamount to a revolution.

“The police or even the military should take action and put away the political leaders who incited the people to overthrow the BN government,” Wan Junaidi told the Borneo Post.

Citing the examples of Egypt, Libya, Syria and Tunisia, he said the people of these countries had resorted to remove the ruling regimes by force but these countries were still plagued with problems.

“They (opposition leaders) joined the fold and participated in the election process. When they lost, they claimed that they don’t have faith in the system.

“The fact is that they failed to convince the people,” said Wan Junaidi.

Meanwhile, state DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen when contacted yesterday said state DAP would follow the stand of the party which has yet to make its stand on the matter.

“As far as I know, we will not join (taking to the streets to overthrow BN government through force.

“One of our (party) constitutions is to uphold the country’s constitution. And to overthrow BN through force is against the constitution. We will not do it that way.

“No matter how fraudulent our electoral system under BN government is, we will still fight along the line of the constitution,” said the Bandar Kuching MP.

State PKR vice chairman See Chee How also expressed his disagreement to overthrow BN government through “force” or violence.

“If ‘force’ here means ‘the desire of a million people’, I agree. But if it means ‘violence”, then I don’t agree,” said See.

The Batu Lintang assemblyman said under the constitution, people had the rights to assembly and going to the streets peacefully was acceptable to him.

“I will not condone any violence during assembly where people get hurt.

“The people have their constitutional rights, with the rights come the obligations, “said See.

He also disagreed with Haris that there was no democracy in the country as the constitution guaranteed the democratic rights of every Malaysian.

The three politicians were responding to recent news published by online portals quoting the vows of Haris and Tian to overthrow BN government this year by a massive street rally through “force”, claiming that the people could not wait anymore.

Meanwhile, PBB supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday called for actions to stop them from staging the rallies to prevent damage to the country.

Reacting to an online article in Free Malaysia Today titled ‘BN will be toppled this year’, he said: “It looks like some PR leaders are not respecting the wishes of the people and the electoral process and are planning massive street rallies to overthrow the duly elected government by force…there has been few rallies done after the 13th General Election by some PR leaders.

“They openly disputed the election results with intention to arouse public hatred and build up a momentum leading to civil disobedience.

“We don’t want to see chaos and disorder. The police should not wait for the fire to get out of control.

“Pre-emptive laws should be used to stop those with evil intent on their track!” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman, said.

He added: “The millions of silent majority who voted for BN and wanted the country to move forward…their rights must also be protected.”

He emphasised that the rights of the people of Sabah and Sarawak whom he claimed had overwhelmingly supported BN must also be protected and heard.
