SMK Batu Lintang retain trophy for third year

KUCHING : SMK Batu Lintang retained its championship title of best secondary school for the third successive year at the Third Samarahan -Kuching Divisions Inter School Swimming Championships held at the Aquatic Centre of Excellence in Kuching, July 6 -7 and organised by Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (KOTAS).

Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, KOTAS Special Advisor who is also Sarawak Assistant Minister for Youth and Housing was present to declare open the championships.

In his speech, he said that when he first sponsored the perpetual trophies he was not sure if the meet would end up being a one-off.

However, now in its third year, he commended KOTAS for making the championships a regular fixture in the local swimming calendar.

He noted that each year entries had grown and this year there were over 30 schools competing in the weekend-long event.

He mentioned that it was unfortunate the meet could not take place at the Kota Samarahan Pool as in the past years.

“I understand that there are some technical problems and I will see what can be done to fix the pool up,” he said, referring to the breakdown of the filtration system and other maintenance issues at the Samarahan pool which necessitated a last-minute change of venue to the Aquatic Centre of Excellence in Kuching.

Haji Abdul Karim thanked all the corporate sponsors, including Cahya Mata Sarawak, Instacom Group Berhad, Hock Seng Lee Berhad, Sarawak Energy Berhad, The Timber Land Group, Lee Ling Construction, Metro Sedia Sdn Bhd and Kimgres Marketing Sdn Bhd for supporting such a positive community event.

He also complimented those companies who had given in kind, including supplying refreshments for the meet and Milo (Nestle) for providing the medals and trophies.

He also acknowledged the teachers, parents and coaches for dedicating their time to allow students to compete.

As Sarawak is hosting the aquatic sports for SUKMA 2016, he also suggested that it was timely to identify talents in the pool because the state hoped to continue its traditional strength in swimming.

After 96 different events over two days of competition, it was SJK Chung Hua No.2 and SMK Batu Lintang which emerged best Primary and best Secondary schools respectively.
