ROLLING: This demonstration car overturned during a reverse-turn stunt in Kuching yesterday.

KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Housing Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah suffered minor scratches on his left arm yesterday when a car demonstration at Travillion Commercial Centre here went wrong.

Karim was in the foreign-made Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with SM Azli Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin Kamal, the chief executive officer of Greenoranges Sales & Services Sdn Bhd and Hong Boon Pau, the executive director of YLH Autoworld Sdn Bhd when the car overturned during a reverse-turn stunt.

SM Azli and Hong were not injured.

The driver sustained head injuries, and was taken to the hospital.

The first attempt on the reverse-turn stunt to showcase the car’s slick capabilities was successful, but in the second attempt the rear tyre lifted off the ground and the car ended up landing sideways on the driver side.

The impact of the accident crushed the windshield and damaged the front driver pillar and fender.

Stunned safety personnel and guests at the product demonstration rushed to give a helping hand.

Karim was the first to climb out of the SUV, and he joined others to turn over the SUV.

He left the function immediately after being interviewed by reporters.

“We were lucky as all of us were wearing seatbelts. I have been in the same situation before, and what is important is not to panic. Such accidents can happen to any car. It is just one of those unfortunate days,” said Kairm.

“The incident is a small matter, and I hope the driver recovers fast.”

SM Azli told reporters it was the first time such an incident occurred with this brand of vehicle during demonstrations in Malaysia.

“We have done numerous demonstrations, and this was the first incident so far. It was a human factor and we will conduct a post mortem. We must be responsible,” he said.

HELPING HAND: A worker attends to the injured driver.
