KUCHING: Government departments and the private sector are urged to emulate the example of Beras Nasional Bhd (Bernas) in discharging their corporate social responsibility in providing the much needed assistance to the needy.

According to Assistant Minister of Social Development, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the ‘bubur pedas’ and ‘bubur lambuk’ festival organised by Bernas and Saberkas this Ramadan succeeded in attracting the participation of various organisations to work together.

“This is a model worthy of emulating. Through the programme Bernas and Saberkas have taught the youths much about volunteerism which involves the preparation and cooking of the porridge,” Abdul Karim said at the festival held at Bernas office in Jalan Green Road here yesterday.

Bernas’ chief executive officer for Sabah and Sarawak, Kamaluddin Affendie, said earlier in his speech, that some RM50,000 had been allocated for the festival this year.

“We are proud that the festival has now entered its 10th year and involving 24 locations across the state.”

He said the programme complemented other Bernas CSR efforts especially in helping the needy during natural disaster such as floods and fires.

A total of 500 packets each of bubur lambuk and bubur pedas were distributed to the public at the event yesterday.
