Extremist activities in Sarawak unlikely -Karim

July 11, 2013

KUCHING: Extremist activities in Sarawak are unlikely as the state is known to be peaceful with all various communities living in harmony.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated this after officiating at the launching of Kuching City South Council’s (MBKS) 2013 Ramadan Bazaar at the Stutong Community Market here, yesterday.

Commenting on a news report of the warning issued by the Special Task Force (Operations & Counter Terrorism) set up by the police, on a growing trend of home-grown extremists taking their causes to conflict zones in foreign countries, Karim said he personally believed that this was only a speculation.

“Even in Peninsular Malaysia, I doubt if there is anyone who goes to that level to fight for another country, like Syria or Afghanistan,” he said, adding that if the police had proofs, they could charge the activitists as terrorists.
