PBB Youth wants more exco members

 July 29, 2013

“BN needs to engage youths and understand their feelings and aspirations if it wanted youths to support them. It is not an easy task." -Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: PBB may soon amend a PBB Youth regulation to increase the number of exco members.

PBB Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof said the proposal was meant to enable more youth members to hold positions in the party.

“It will thus give them the opportunity to contribute at the state level,” he said when asked about measures to woo more youths to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) side.

Bernama has quoted Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaludin as saying BN needed to have more support from youths in order to do better in the next general election.

Khairy reportedly said the opposition had a lot of young members, and BN should do likewise as it was important to ensure the voice of youths remained strong and loud.

Fadillah, who is also state BN Youth chief and Petra Jaya MP, said: “In Sarawak, we work for all the people. There are programmes to tackle all segments of society.”

He added there would always be programmes to engage youths, and this ranged from consultations to listening to their views and expectations.

‘Emulate Bernas’ CSR effort’

July 26, 2013

GOOD EXAMPLE: Abdul Karim (centre) presents a bubur lambuk packet to a recipient.
KUCHING: Government departments and the private sector are urged to emulate the example of Beras Nasional Bhd (Bernas) in discharging their corporate social responsibility in providing the much needed assistance to the needy.

According to Assistant Minister of Social Development, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the ‘bubur pedas’ and ‘bubur lambuk’ festival organised by Bernas and Saberkas this Ramadan succeeded in attracting the participation of various organisations to work together.

“This is a model worthy of emulating. Through the programme Bernas and Saberkas have taught the youths much about volunteerism which involves the preparation and cooking of the porridge,” Abdul Karim said at the festival held at Bernas office in Jalan Green Road here yesterday.

Bernas’ chief executive officer for Sabah and Sarawak, Kamaluddin Affendie, said earlier in his speech, that some RM50,000 had been allocated for the festival this year.

“We are proud that the festival has now entered its 10th year and involving 24 locations across the state.”

He said the programme complemented other Bernas CSR efforts especially in helping the needy during natural disaster such as floods and fires.

Karim: Helping the needy an emphasis in Islam

KUCHING: The teaching of Islam emphasises that those who have the ability and wealth should lend a hand and assist others, especially the needy and unfortunate individuals.

Assistant Minister of Housing and Youth Development Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said in this context, bringing joy and lessening the burden of their Muslim brothers and sisters in the holy Ramadan month would also count.

“While we are preparing to celebrate the coming of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, please bear in mind that there are still lots of people out there who are less fortunate than us,” Karim pointed out.

He said this in his speech when officiating at the Bubur Lambuk and Bubur Pedas Programme which was jointly organised by Beras Nasional (BERNAS) and Sarawak Youth National Organisation (SABERKAS) at BERNAS office, Green Road, here yesterday.

“Even though, it’s just a free handout container of Bubur Lambuk or Bubur Pedas, to the some of the recipients, it would at least an additional food placed onto their tables when breaking their fast.

“Therefore, the effort initiated and taken by BERNAS and SABERKAS in bringing the Raya festivity mood and joy should serve as an example to the other parties as well,” the Assistant Minister pointed out.

Karim, who is also Saberkas Vice President said that through the joint programme, the SABERKAS members participating in the event would feel the first-hand experience interacting with the people.

DAP only interested to split the Dayaks -Karim

SIBU: While DAP bragged about its intended expansion into the rural areas in Sarawak, it shied away from the Malay/Melanau majority areas, noted PBB supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“From the seats mentioned by YB Chong (Chieng Jen), I can see that none are in Malay/Melanau majority areas and this also reflected their fear or inability to penetrate those areas,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was responding to news reports quoting Chong, who is state DAP chairman, as saying they targeted to set up branches in 21 rural constituencies within the next two months to strengthen their rural reach.

He was also quoted to have said if they could break the hegemony of Barisan Nasional (BN) in the rural areas it would be a big step towards ‘Ubah’ (change).

To this, Abdul Karim said: “Being a democratic country, it is DAP’s right to set up branches or contest anywhere in Malaysia.

“BN’s strength as seen from the last general election rests on the rural and semi-rural as well as certain urban seats.

“It would be unfair to say that the urban voters had neglected BN as the seat of Petra Jaya and Santubong, where BN won with huge majorities of above 20,000, have almost all their voters staying in Kuching.”

Karim laugh off Chee How's good dream of ousting BN in state election

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday laughed off Pakatan Rakyat (PR)’s confidence in ousting Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next state election.

He said the statement by state Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-chairman See Chee How was like “having a good dream”.

“Well… it is always beautiful to have good dreams… he (See Chee How) can keep on dreaming,” he responded yesterday when asked for his opinion on See’s statement that PR was confident of victory in the next state election, and would go all out to oust BN.

Among others, See, who is Batu Lintang assemblyman, was quoted as saying that PR was gearing towards capturing power in the state in the next state election.

“So the next state election, we (PR) are going all out not for ourselves, but for the people in general,” he said.

Sarawak has 71 state constituencies. Abdul Karim pointed out that without sounding arrogant, the state cannot be equated with other states.

“The state BN component parties had looked after the state, and the people are generally happy despite the instigation and mudslinging by PR,” he stressed, citing the 13th general election (GE13) in May.

Extremist activities in Sarawak unlikely -Karim

July 11, 2013

KUCHING: Extremist activities in Sarawak are unlikely as the state is known to be peaceful with all various communities living in harmony.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated this after officiating at the launching of Kuching City South Council’s (MBKS) 2013 Ramadan Bazaar at the Stutong Community Market here, yesterday.

Commenting on a news report of the warning issued by the Special Task Force (Operations & Counter Terrorism) set up by the police, on a growing trend of home-grown extremists taking their causes to conflict zones in foreign countries, Karim said he personally believed that this was only a speculation.

No way Sarawakians to fight in Syria -Karim

as one of the sponsors for the event and community leader Temenggong Lu Kim Yong (right).

KUCHING: There is no truth to the so-called growing trend of home-grown extremists, especially in Sarawak.

Youth Development Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he believed it was just a rumour a national daily’s claim there was such a trend in Peninsular Malaysia, where extremists had taken their cause to conflict zones like Syria.

“I don’t think there is anyone who would go to the extent of fighting for another country, such as Syria or Afghanistan. There might have been a few in the past, who were so-called linked to Indonesian extremists, but after that I don’t see the trend anymore.”

Abdul Karim said this yesterday when approached by reporters after he had launched the Ramadan Bazaar at Stutong.

“If the authorities have evidence of people being involved in extremist activities, then charge them.”

Abdul Karim, who is also Housing Assistant Minister, said he believed this trend would not take root in the state.

Practise good hygiene and ensure good quality, traders told

July 11, 2013

KUCHING: Traders at the Stutong Ramadan Bazaar are reminded to practise good hygiene and keep their premises clean.

Housing Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this is ensure the food and drinks that they sell are not contaminated and are of good quality.

“The purpose of setting up stalls here is to sell food and beverages for profit. However, the traders must ensure that food quality is not compromised.

“Make sure the food is fresh and not recycled so that customers will be attracted to patronise the stalls,” he said at the official launch of the Ramadan Bazaar at the Stutong Community Market here yesterday.

On another note, Abdul Karim said the bazaar is a good platform to improve and foster closer ties among the many races in the city.

“As we can see, there are people of various races patronising the bazaar. Such is the spirit of 1Malaysia that we want to inculcate in everyone,” he noted.

The Stutong Ramadan Bazaar is an annual affair organised by MBKS since 2008.

Penjaja di bazar Ramadan diseru jaga mutu makanan

July 11, 2013

Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, KOTAS Special Advisor who is also Sarawak Assistant Minister for Youth and Housing was present to declare open the championships.

In his speech, he said that when he first sponsored the perpetual trophies he was not sure if the meet would end up being a one-off.

However, now in its third year, he commended KOTAS for making the championships a regular fixture in the local swimming calendar.

He noted that each year entries had grown and this year there were over 30 schools competing in the weekend-long event.

He mentioned that it was unfortunate the meet could not take place at the Kota Samarahan Pool as in the past years.

“I understand that there are some technical problems and I will see what can be done to fix the pool up,” he said, referring to the breakdown of the filtration system and other maintenance issues at the Samarahan pool which necessitated a last-minute change of venue to the Aquatic Centre of Excellence in Kuching.

Karim said this when launching the ‘AZAM Youth Central’ and the official opening of ‘Young Souls Station’ which was organised by Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak (AZAM) and held at Medan Pelita here yesterday.

He said that with the Young Souls Station, he hoped that the young people can use the space and facilities provided for good use so that they can contribute to the development of the country.

“Nowadays we are hearing a lot about youth getting involved in crime and other social issues. Hopefully with this, youth can be drawn out and participate in activities which are positive and aimed towards building not only themselves, but the nation as well.

“Hopefully more activities for youth will be organised in this spot because it is a strategic location being right in the middle of the city,” Karim said.

AZAM CEO Datu Aloysius Dris said he hoped the centre would provide an avenue youth from different backgrounds and communities to converge in healthy activities and discussions.

“This process can strengthen the unity among the different communities and contribute to the social harmony in Sarawak,” said Aloysius.
