SIBU: Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah blasted PKR Nangka chief for his unfounded remark on BR1M 4.0, calling it a move to gain popularity.
Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, was reacting to Abdul Raafidin Majidi’s claim that the government’s move to increase BR1M 4.0 for all recipients was to pacify the people in the wake of the reduction in fuel subsidy by 20 sen.
Abdul Raafidin further likened the government’s approach under Budget 2015 as administering ‘paracetamol to cancer patients’, while calling it a populist approach.
To this, Abdul Karim said: “It’s unfortunate that a young PKR fellow like Raafidin would choose to shoot in the dark and giving ridiculous reasons to gain popularity.
“BRIM has been planned years ago and even at its initial stage, we have been informed that the amount would be increased progressively through the years.
“It has nothing to do with what he has accused the government of doing. Instead, the government is just doing what it has promised to do.
“Nothing that the government does and plans for the people are seen as good in the eyes of the opposition including PKR.
“To them, whatever that the government does are to hoodwink the people.”
Meanwhile, state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said the opposition’s negative comments on BR1M 4.0 did not bother them as people’s welfare was their priority.
“It is the responsibility of the government to ease the burden of the people and will do so to our level best within the affordability of the government,” said Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications).
He said the opposition would lose their political appeal if people were happy, hence, it was not a surprise if the comment was always negative on whatever steps the government was taking.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Finance Minister, when tabling Budget 2015 last Friday announced that BR1M would be raised from RM650 to RM950 for households with monthly income of RM3,000 and below while household with monthly income from RM3,000 to RM4,000 the amount would be increased from RM450 to RM750.
As for single individuals aged 21 and above and with a monthly income not exceeding RM2,000 the amount would be raised from RM300 to RM350. -TheBorneoPost
