KUCHING, June 26: A special committee set up by the state government is currently in talks with AirAsia Bhd’s top management on the proposal to build a Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) here.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed LCCT would be connected to the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.
Speaking at the launch of ‘Kuching Waterfront Jazz Festival 2018 (KWJF2018)’ today, Abdul Karim said details of the LCCT would be announced at an appropriate time due to its importance. In fact, it will become an integral part of the state’s transportation masterplan.
It is believed that the cost for this initiative would be split evenly between the two parties.
Thus far, its location has been kept under wraps, but speculations are rife that it could be along one of the three announced LRT lines: Kota Samarahan-Sungai Batu-Damai, Serian-Siburan-Senari, and City Dispersal Line.
AirAsia group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes had announced that the company was negotiating with Sarawak to construct an LCCT here, estimated to cost between RM200 million and RM300 million, to make Sarawak a regional low-cost carrier hub.
Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said since AirAsia had a good working relationship with the state government, he hoped the award-winning airline would become a major sponsor of KWJF 2018. — DayakDaily
