Get your facts straight on Morshidi, Sarawak minister tells DAP rep

Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah maintains that Petronas board member Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani was performing the umrah in Saudi Arabia at the time of the emergency meeting.

PETALING JAYA: A Sarawak minister has slammed DAP assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon for saying state secretary Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani betrayed the state by missing an emergency board meeting on oil rights affecting the state.

Speaking to FMT, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah maintained that Morshidi had been performing the umrah in Saudi Arabia at the time of the meeting.

He added that Ting should have read the explanations given by Morshidi and national oil company Petronas, where Morshidi is a board member, before making such claims.

“Petronas has clarified that Morshidi was in Saudi Arabia to perform the umrah when the emergency meeting was called. He should check his facts before labelling someone a traitor.

“If Ting is angry over Petronas’ move, he should take it up with the Pakatan Harapan leadership. After all, being part of the government, they have direct access to Putrajaya which can intervene as Petronas answers to them.”

Ting, who is Pujut assemblyman, had urged Morshidi to resign for being absent from the meeting, saying he was not fit to represent and safeguard the rights of Sarawak in Petronas.

This followed Morshidi’s claim that he had been unaware of the emergency meeting where Petronas decided to file a court application to declare exclusive ownership over the country’s petroleum resources.

It said it was doing so by virtue of the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA).

Karim said if anyone should be labelled a traitor, it was Ting who had left Malaysia for Australia and even become a permanent resident there.
