KUCHING: Establishing a strong core based on volunteerism and unity is the key to the success of any Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT) across the state.

According to Assistant Minister of Housing and Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Rahman Hamzah, the KRT is an instrumental entity especially among the grassroots communities, as its approach is closer to home, making it more appealing to all.

“Therefore it is imperative that KRTs remain active in carrying out constructive programmes for the people in their neighbourhoods,” he said during KRT Kota Samarahan appreciation dinner at a hotel here last Saturday.

At the event, organised by state National Unity and Integration Department, Abdul Karim told KRT committee members that they would be most welcome to approach state or federal people’s representatives to seek additional funds for their activities.

KRT members, he stressed, must be more confident and committed in ensuring that their responsibilities would be carried out effectively – with the body being an extended arm of the National Unity and Integration Department.

Abdul Karim suggested that local KRTs conduct working visits to their counterparts across the state or in Peninsular Malaysia.

“These visits will enable our KRT members to learn from their counterparts in other parts of the state and country on how to improve their operations,” he said.

On another note, Abdul Karim – who is also Asajaya assemblyman – called on every KRT especially those in flood-prone areas to be on alert this rainy season.

Meanwhile, state National Unity and Integration director Dirwana Azool noted that Kota Samarahan had been seeing an upsurge of KRTs over the past four years.

“In 2010, the district only has eight KRTs. Today, it is home to 64 KRTs, with another 20 new KRT ones expected to be formed this year,” he said.

The department, Dirwana said, would be focusing more on the National Blue Ocean Strategy this year, raising the standard of living of the communities here, especially of single mothers, through a number of economic programmes.

He also called on the KRTs to come up with fresh ideas in drawing the interests of youths in their respective areas.

“Involving youths in various healthy programmes is a positive step towards avoiding them from getting involved in social ills,” said Dirwana.
