KUCHING: The International Summit on Peace, scheduled to run from Sept 6 to 8, will highlight unique pathways to empower individuals in advancing peace in their distinct communities.
Driven by Junior Chambers International (JCI) with the support from the state government, the summit will gather more than 800 JCI members and representatives of social and youth organisations around the world at the state capital as a prelude to the International Day of Peace, which falls on Sept 21.
“As Malaysia’s only ‘City of Unity’, peace is very much a part of the Kuching’s DNA.
“The continuity of peace is crucial for the spur of further development in our state as it boosts tourism and ultimately, contributes to the betterment of society.
“Through the comprehensive programme line-up and teh event’s distinguished list of speakers, we are also hoping to invite three keynote speakers to contribute to the summit’s peace-making initiatives,” said Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in a press statement issued by Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) yesterday.
The international summit will feature workshops, plenary discussions and keynote addresses by international trainers and youth leaders.
In addition, the state government will conduct tours to showcase the cultural and religious diversity of local communities. The event will conclude with a ‘Peace is Possible Proclamation’ and a musical concert.
President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, Queen Mathilde of Belgium and President of the Republic of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos will be the VVIP speakers.
Sarawak won the bid to host the International Summit of Peace in February this year, with the unanimous coalition of the state government and SCB.
