February 12, 2015

ASAJAYA: There is no plan by the Fire and Rescue Department to build a fire station here.

The revelation was made yesterdy by the Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“As for proposal for a fire station to be built in Asajaya, the matter has already been proposed but Bomba has its own procedures in regards to the overall population of the area.

I was told that there are no plans as of yet to build a fire station here,” he quoted by an English daily.

He said, inview of this, there was a pressing need to establish a volunteer firefighting unit in the district and hoped that the villagers — through their respective village security and development committees — would collaborate with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) to hold courses and be supplied with firefighting equipment.

Karim, who is the Housing and Youth Development Assistant Minister, was in Kampung Sambir to meet up with fire victims and made a personal contribution.

He also handed over foodstuff and other basic necessities on behalf of the district office and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Asajaya.

The assistant minister also promised that he would make arrangements to assist the fire victims to rebuild their gutted homes in time for them to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year.

Meanwhile the Civil Defence Department (JPAM) officer Shaiful Azril Zainal, when met by the press after handing over daily necessities to the fire victims, said the department's scope of duties was not merely restricted to rescue operations, but also included distributing assistance to victims following any tragedy.

He said had a wide range of duties, which included transporting victims to hospitals, providing assistance during fires, floods, storms and landslides, clearing uprooted trees and catching wild animals.

“Additionally, we also participate in gotong-royong activities to help clear areas hit by floods, as well as provide counselling to those affected,” he said.

The assistance programme, involving some 20 JPAM personnel from Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Asajaya, was a collaboration between JPAM and the MERS999 Emergency Centre in Kuching.
