ASAJAYA: Young people with disabilities or special needs who are keen in sports should be encouraged to pursue their interest.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it was important for the society and parents with disabled children to do their bid as sports could give the disabled the confidence to live life to the full.

“Do not think less of people with special needs, especially those interested to participate in athletics. Strong support and guidance from the society, in particular the parents, is important to help people with disabilities to be confident in living life normally,” said the Asajaya assemblyman when closing the Samarahan-level (OKU Sports) i-Talent Camp here yesterday.

Samarahan Youth and Sports officer Syed Zyed Wan Asnawi was present.

The one-day event attracted about 60 people with intellectual development disorder from SMK Asajaya and community-based rehabilitation centres (PDK) of Sri Melayu, Harmoni Asajaya, and Sadong Jaya.

Abdul Karim said guidance from parents and continuous support from the community could go a long way in motivating those with disabilities to feel part of the society.

Syed Zyed said the programme was meant to spot new sporting talents who could be future state and national athletes.

“The long term goal is to polish them for, hopefully, the Paralympics.”

Under the programme, five tests were conducted: anthropometry test, agility, balance, explosive force ability, and horizontal static jump.
