KUCHING: A website has been launched to further popularise the local-born sport of hitmenten.

Hitmenten Club Petra Jaya founder Abdul Rahman Hassan said he hoped the website could increase the effectiveness of promoting the sport which was introduced in 2008.

“This is why we are launching our website, hitmenten.com. We hope that it will be more effective and attract the younger generation. Many may not know what hitmenten is but I believe that it has the potential to be an important championship in the country if there is effort to develop it,” he added during the launch at a hotel here yesterday

The sport, he explained, is an extreme sport combining badminton, basketball, volleyball and golf, best described as a new type of badminton.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that folk games like kabaddi, lawn bowling and others were also new to the people at one time but finally got recognised as national sports.

“I believe hitmenten is a game that can be played by all ages and, if promoted orderly, it can be further developed. With the launching of the website, more people will learn it and it may even be picked up outside the country.”

He added that the government, through the State Sports Council will give support to the development of hitmenten.

Abdul Karim also presented an allocation of RM3,000 to the club to hold its activities.
