KUCHING: The community ought to shoulder the obligation of keeping their neighbourhoods safe instead of constantly relying on the authorities.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it serves no purpose if residents leave everything to the authorities, but do nothing themselves.

“I feel that residents should show keen interest by playing their role to report any illegal activities to the authorities, rather than choosing to keep mum about it.

“Drug abuse, for example, is something that many people choose to close their eyes on, because they don’t want any trouble.

“It is this feeling of apathy that keeps resident from doing what they should (be doing),” he said when closing the DBKU Safe Neighbhourhood Workshop 2019 at a hotel here yesterday.

Abdul Karim said the spirit of community has changed over the years, with today’s parents placing too much emphasis on their children’s academic excellence rather than on moral and social values.

He observed that some parents did not even bother to tell their children that littering is wrong.

“During our younger days, we did not even have fencing in our villages but incidences of thefts, break-ins and other social ills were not many.

“It’s because we all observed and practised the community spirit, and we knew and cared about what happened in our villages,” he said.

He thus hoped that more people would do their part in making Kuching a more harmonious and liveable city for all.

Among those present were Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) director Dr Morshidi Ahmad. -TheBorneoPost
