SIBU: Any amount of contribution from the federal government is very much welcomed in view of the termination of many tourism infrastructure related projects and events the past one year, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said yesterday.
He said this when commenting on a statement by the Finance Ministry on Thursday which confirmed the federal government will pay the 50 per cent tourism tax to the Sarawak government by end of this month as promised.
Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, added: “First quarter of 2019 is almost nearing its end and if what the Ministry of Finance had said that they would be paying Sarawak its share of the tourism tax … I wish to say Thank You.
“The tourism tax given (to) Sarawak comes from taxes collected from tourists spending their nights in starred hotels in Sarawak and their coming to and knowing about Sarawak are much due to the promotional efforts by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and the state Ministry of Tourism.
