Thousands attended the "New Year 2024 Countdown" at Kuching Waterfront

Thousands of our folks from Kuching City and its vicinities had joined the "New Year 2024 Coundown" celebration which was held at Kuching Waterfront on December 31.

The event was graced by our Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg who was also accompanied by his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Jumaani Tuanku Bujang and several local local dignitaries.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the unveiling of Malaysia’s tallest flagpole by the guest of honour who also announced the iconic flagpole’s name as "Ibu Pertiwi", to the rapturous applause by the thousands in a attendance.

According to him, if Malaysia’s national flag is known as the Jalur Gemilang, then let Sarawak’s (flagpole) will be known as "Ibu Pertiwi" while the area surrounding the flagpole will be known as "Dataran Ibu Pertiwi”.

The 99 meters flagpole is also the tallest in Southeast Asia and is poised to become another iconic tourism landmark for Kuching City. The structure is expected to attract both local and international tourists eager to capture its magnificence through photographs and social media postings.

The countdown was kicked off with a six-hour dance and live performances featuring popular Sarawakian performers and renowned Malaysian artistes including Datuk Amy Search, Datuk Zainal Abidin, Hael Husaini, Floor 88, and DeFam, as well as a boat parade along the Sarawak river. The fireworks display stole the limelight of the countdown celebration to the delight of those who stayed on until wee hours of the new year's day morning.
