Site visit to Brooke Dockyard Industrial Museum

We had accompanied our Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg who visited the Brooke Dockyard Industrial Heritage Museum in Kuching yesterday. The new museum which will be another tourism attraction in the city is 86 per cent completed and is expected to be opened to the public before the end of 2024.

According to the Premier, the dockyard was once a thriving shipyard and had undergone a transformation into a historical site with deep ties to Sarawak’s maritime and shipbuilding history founded during the Brooke family reign.

In fact, the museum was proposed by the Premier himself during his tenure as Sarawak's former tourism minister.

The dockyard was established by Sarawak's second White Rajah, Charles Brooke and it had played a crucial role in shipbuilding and repair works locally. Hence, the Sarawak Government had embarked on this project with a vision to upgrade and showcase its rich history.

The area that is being restored has a budget of RM42 million, and an additional RM5 million has been allocated for further enhancements for better public's experience at the museum. During the visit, our Premier had identified few key elements for preservation, including an old crane and machinery, which will become part of the museum’s exhibits.

These include artefacts such as propellers, imported machineries etc that will offer visitors a glimpse into Sarawak’s rich maritime and shipbuilding heritage in which the site into a recreational hub, potentially featuring a restaurant.
