KUCHING: Ex badminton international Ong Ewe Hock returned to Penang yesterday after a 2-day visit here.
He made a courtesy call on Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at his office yesterday.
It is understood that the ex badminton star was on a preliminary visit here to explore ways to possibly offer his expertise to help the development of badminton in Sarawak.
He was accompanied by his two local friends Bit Surang and Henry Kilah Talek.
Ong first captured national attention in 1988 when he won the National Under-18 doubles title.
He went on to become a regular player in the national team including representing Malaysia in the Thomas Cup series.
He retired in 2002 and stayed out of the limelight until two years ago when he returned to active coaching.
“Badminton will always be my passion. I just cannot live without it even though I stayed completely away from the game after my retirement,” he said.
Datuk Abdul Karim said Sarawak always welcome an exchange of ideas on the development of badminton or sports in the state.
He observed that badminton already enjoy strong recreational interest locally. What is needed, he added, is to further enhance a professional approach in the long-term development of the sport in Sarawak.
