There is so much excitement on the coming 2027 Southeast Asia (SEA) Games in which Sarawak had expressed the willingness to share co-hosting duties with other states which include Penang and Sabah which had expressed interest in hosting a few sports in the biennial Games.
I have mentioned this to our media friends at the sidelines of this morning's press conference held at our office. I have also mentioned that Sabah's Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin had came over to my office prior to the 21st Malaysia Games (SukmaXXI) with a delegation requesting if possible, for them to host a few of the sports. I was made to understand Penang wants to host just one sport.
I am open to it if the other states are able to co-host the Games and why not because it is not for Sarawak to monopolise. For the record, Sarawak had been asked to choose half of the 36 sports in the 2027 SEA Games to be held locally but this was subject to other states' involvement as co-hosts.
But of course the final decision should be made collectively with the Federal's Ministry of Youth and Sports and the respective states, taking into consideration the sports facilities available. I would say swimming, diving and tenpin bowling should be in Sarawak because we have the best facilities for these sports. For example, we also have a 42-lane facility for ten-pin bowling.
Our shooting range is also the top in Malaysia after the RM4mil upgrading for the recent Sukma. I was made to response on the Feceral's Ministry of Youth and Sports on August 28 which had announced that Malaysia had agreed to accept the SEA Games Federation's offer to host the 2027 Games. The ministry through a statement had said the Cabinet had approved the decision after taking into account the commitment pledged by Sarawak, Sabah and Penang to co-host the Games with Kuala Lumpur.
