Looking forward to the development of a new Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Bintulu

We look forward to the proposed development of a new Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Bintulu which will serve to protect the rich in natural gas resources along with Sarawak's oil reserves and marine life in the vicinities.

The development of the Markas Wilayah Laut 4 (MAWILLA 4) base in Bintulu is a timely decision because it augurs well for the security of Sarawak. I have mentioned these to our media friends recently and had emphasised that Bintulu’s position as a hub of economic activity makes it essential for the area must be well-protected always.

This is most important especially given the ongoing tensions in the South China Sea. I have also highlighted that the location of Bintulu, coupled with the presence of valuable offshore resources such as oil and gas, necessitates a robust naval presence to safeguard against potential maritime threats.

The proposed new base will also be crucial for maintaining the readiness of our national borders and airspace against any potential threats.

Although the proposal for the new base is still in its planning stages, I have expressed hope for the Federal government would expedite the process. The call for the base considers the uncertainties that could arise in the next 10 to 20 years, especially concerning maritime security. Additionally, we must always protect the majority of coastal and offshore areas in Bintulu and Sarawak's shores in general because prevention is always better than cure.
