Ministry to develop esports in Sarawak

KUCHING: Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Cultures, Youth and Sports will help in the development of esports or electronic sports in Sarawak as it involved youth and esports is now widely recognised and accepted in the world.

Its minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said playing computer games o electronic games is no longer regarded as a nuisance by the parents who were once worried that because their children are not sweating but sitting in front of computer games every day instead of getting involved in sports.

"Esports has reached its pinnacles as it is accepted as a sport in Sukma and in the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games. Esports will be competed as a medal event in the SEA Games in the Philippines.

"We cannot put this sports aside in Sarawak. That's why the Ministry will be very supportive of whatever initiative to develop it," he said at the opening of the first and biggest esports expo at CityOne Megamall yesterday.

"We will try make it a bigger and grander event next year. CityOne Megamall has been very kind to support the Sarawak Esports Association by allocating space in this building for the development of this sport.

"I would also like to see Kuching becoming the hub for esports," he said, noting that there were participants from Indonesia and Brunei in the esports expo.

The Asajaya assemblyman also advised esports enthusiasts not to be too engrossed in esports.

"You need to spend some time to do some kind of exercise or sports to keep yourself healthy," he said.

Also present were Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Youth and Sports Department Sarawak director Mohd Nizam Ismail, Sarawak Esports Association (Sesa) president Afiq Fadli Narawi and CityOne Mall general manager Brandon Lo. -TheBorneoPost
